Santa Monica Studios Reveals Next Installment In The God of War Series

Wrapping up PlayStation’s State of Play, Sony dropped a surprise announcement of a new God of War spinoff starring Kratos’ wife, Laufey. The announcement came with 20 minutes of gameplay and cutscenes, revealing the early story along with a varied cast of allies and enemies alike.

The showcase begins with Laufey (Fey for short) waking up in a mysterious ancient ruin immediately following her cremation by Kratos and Atreus. She proceeds through the unknown realm and is followed by a mythical spirit that briefly assists her. Unfortunately, she doesn’t make it far before she is captured by two large armored monsters, who take her to a large encampment where tons of different kinds of magical creatures and humanoids alike are being killed, enslaved, and imprisoned. While the identities of many of these creatures are not disclosed, they appear to be creatures from various mythologies, including Mongol, Japanese, and Egyptian.

Sekhmet and Begtes in God of War: Laufey
Laufey, wife of Kratos, face to face with the Egyptian Goddess of War, Sekhmet, and the Mongolian God of War, Begtes.

Laufey is brought before a massive demon-looking creature who is revealed to be Begtes, the Mongolian God of War, and Sekhmet, the Egyptian God of War. Their purposes are not fully revealed, but are definitely nefarious, and Laufey is briefly imprisoned before teaming up with a gelatinous cube with a sword stuck in it. The cube’s name is Phranque, and the ribbons on the sword are Rue. Laufey channels the strength of her memories and home to free herself and her new friends from their cage, and immediately does battle with Begtes before the showcase concludes.

The game was formally announced as God of War: Laufey. While the gameplay didn’t reveal much about the core conflict, the PlayStation blog followed up the announcement, explaining that the game takes place in a realm called the Everywhen, a mystical gateway of many gods and other mythical creatures. It’s impossible to speculate further, but what we have seen so far looks very in line with the rebooted God of War franchise, with plenty of action, compelling combat, and a story that will no doubt answer lingering questions on Faye’s involvement in the prophecies she foretold in the first two games.

A release date has not yet been announced. Whenever we learn more about that, we will be sure to let you know, so keep checking GameObserver!
