After Larian Studios moved on from Baldur’s Gate 3, many fans have been wondering what comes next for the series. While Baldur’s Gate 4 was officially planned, a new report claims that Wizards of the Coast is first looking back at one of the franchise’s most beloved games.
According to PC Gamer, a full remake of Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn is currently in development at Wizards of the Coast. The report suggests that this is not just a simple remaster, but a complete remake of the RPG classic originally released by BioWare in 2000, which is still considered one of the greatest role-playing games ever made.

The report also claims that Kevin Martens is involved in the project. He was one of the lead designers behind the original Baldur’s Gate 2 and is allegedly working on the remake. In addition, Martens has been working with Wizards of the Coast as a creative lead on Archetype Entertainment’s upcoming sci-fi RPG, Exodus.
A remake of the original 1998 Baldur’s Gate is “likely” in development as well according to the same source. If both projects are being worked on at the same time, it could open the door to a bundled release featuring remakes of the first two games. That would make a lot of sense for Wizards of the Coast. With Baldur’s Gate 3 bringing the series back into the spotlight, remakes of the original games could introduce a new generation of players to the franchise while giving longtime fans a reason to return. In the meantime, these remakes could also help fill the wait for Baldur’s Gate 4, as Wizards of the Coast works out its plans for the next main entry in the series without Larian Studios.
Nonetheless, while this news might excite many fans, it should still be taken with a pinch of salt, as nothing has been officially confirmed yet. As more information becomes available, we’ll make sure to keep you all in the know here at GameObserver.
