It turns out Microsoft backed STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl far more than anyone realized, paying for the game’s full development before it ever reached players. During a recent interview, GSC Game World founder Sergiy Grygorovych revealed that Microsoft paid more than the game’s entire development budget to secure timed Xbox console exclusivity. According to him, the agreement not only covered every development cost but also left the studio with money remaining.
While he didn’t reveal the exact numbers, he said (via machine translation), “I am under an NDA, so I cannot share the details. But we took more from Xbox than the cost of STALKER 2. That is to say, it paid for itself before the first day, before it even started selling.” In other words, GSC Game World didn’t have to rely on launch sales to recover the money spent developing the game.
Grygorovych also explained that Microsoft approached GSC Game World after one of the game’s trailers attracted huge attention online. Just one week later, the studio received official contract documents, leading to the agreement. He explained, “We posted the STALKER 2 trailer, and when they saw the number of views that trailer received, they realized [the potential], so in about a week they had already brought everything for us to sign the documents.”
It’s worth noting that STALKER 2 also launched on Xbox Game Pass on day one, giving GSC Game World extra financial support during its long development, especially after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine made developing the game much more difficult. The studio’s main offices came under heavy shelling, forcing development to pause for a time, while the team also faced frequent cyberattacks and hacking attempts.
