Nintendo Switch 2 Beats PS Vita’s Lifetime Sales In Japan After Just 13 Months

Nintendo Switch 2 has now reached another big milestone in Japan. The console has officially sold more units than the PlayStation Vita managed during its entire time on the market, doing it in just over a year instead of almost eight years.

According to tracking data from Game Data Library (via Famitsu), Nintendo Switch 2 has now sold 6,026,931 units in Japan after just 13 months on sale. By comparison, the PlayStation Vita sold around 5.99 million units during its full lifespan in Japan, where it stayed on the market for about eight years, until 2019. Although the Vita struggled to find the same level of success globally, Japan was by far its strongest market, making this milestone especially significant.

Nintendo Switch 2 has overtaken the lifetime sales of the PlayStation Vita in Japan.

What makes this even more impressive is that the Nintendo Switch 2 reached the same sales in just 13 months, while the PlayStation Vita needed almost eight years. Looking ahead, Nintendo already has another milestone to chase. After reaching 6 million units sold, the Switch 2 is now closing in on the Nintendo Switch Lite, which has sold just under 7 million units in Japan. After that, the console will need to pass the PlayStation 5 family, which has sold around 7.6 million units across all models.

The strong start is not just limited to Japan or PlayStation Vita. Nintendo Switch 2 is also selling faster than the original Nintendo Switch did. During its first full fiscal year after launch, Nintendo shipped 19.86 million Switch 2 units worldwide, compared to around 14.89 million units sold by the original Nintendo Switch during the same period, which means the Switch 2 is already ahead by nearly 5 million units.

In other news, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa promised that the company is preparing a “robust” lineup of games and increasing the overall value of the Switch 2. In addition, the company may be planning a Switch 2 OLED with a 1080p Samsung display, but rising costs could delay the console until 2028.
