Nintendo May Be Planning A Switch 2 OLED

If you’re hoping Nintendo will release a Switch 2 OLED model, there’s some good news—but you’ll probably have to wait a while. Reports claim the company is looking into the idea, although rising component costs mean the project has not yet been officially approved.

According to ZDNET Korea, Nintendo is evaluating a potential OLED refresh for the Switch 2 using Samsung Display panels. If the plan moves forward, it would follow the same mid-generation upgrade strategy Nintendo used with the original Switch, which received an OLED model a few years after launch.

Development of the Nintendo Switch 2 OLED may begin by the end of the year

The reported model would feature a 1080p (Full HD) rigid OLED display, a major step up from the 720p OLED screen found on the original Nintendo Switch OLED. The upgrade is expected to focus only on the display, with no plans for a “Pro” version that includes a faster CPU, GPU, or additional memory. If Nintendo gives the project the green light, development could begin by the end of 2026, while mass production is expected to start in late 2027 or early 2028. That would likely put the console’s release sometime in 2028.

For now, however, Nintendo has not made a final decision, so it’s best to take these reports with a grain of salt. The biggest hurdle remains the cost, as OLED panels are still much more expensive than standard LCD screens. On top of that, the ongoing global memory shortage continues to put pressure on Nintendo’s supply chain. In other news, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa promised that the company is preparing a “robust” lineup of games and increasing the overall value of the Switch 2. In addition, the company has confirmed a revised Switch 2 with a removable battery for Europe, launching this Fall to meet new EU battery regulations.
