Nintendo Will Prepare “Robust” Lineup To Make Up For Switch 2 Price Rise

Nintendo is facing criticism after confirming a price increase for the Nintendo Switch 2, with the console set to cost $50 more, bringing its price to $499.99 starting September 1. The company says the decision was necessary because of rising hardware costs and difficult market conditions.

As concerns around the higher price continue to grow, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company plans to answer those concerns by releasing more first-party games for the console. He stated, “We will prepare a robust software lineup to enhance the Switch 2 ownership value. We will work diligently to overcome this barrier.”

Nintendo plans to release many new games to increase the platform’s value.

Furukawa also apologized for the “considerable inconvenience” caused by the higher price and explained that the company is trying to deal with growing production expenses. He also said that even with the higher price, the increase still does not fully cover the company’s rising production costs. One of the biggest reasons behind the increase is the global demand for RAM and memory components, especially from AI data centers, which has pushed manufacturing costs much higher in recent months.

Nonetheless, the company believes this plan can help justify the higher console price by giving players more games and better reasons to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 while also helping the system stay successful in the long term. So far, the Switch 2 has done better than the original Switch during its first year and has already sold 19.86 million units, helped by games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.

In other news, Nintendo will begin pricing digital Switch 2 games in the U.S. lower than their physical versions. While physical MSRPs are not technically going up, digital editions of the same titles will carry a standard MSRP that is around $10 lower, beginning with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
