Riot To Roll Out New Parental Controls In The U.S.

Riot has announced that there will now be parental controls for those playing League of LegendsValorant, and Teamfight Tactics on PC in the United States. This is an attempt to create a safer play environment for minors playing these games, as Riot Games has been under fire for toxicity in both voice and text chats.

These parental controls come with moves to make Riot Games safer for minors globally. In certain European countries, under the General Data Protection Regulation, and in Brazil, under the ECA Digital Act, Riot now has to process minors’ data differently under the country’s age of eligibility. Currently, the United States Parental Controls will be optional, unlike those in these other aforementioned areas.

If parents choose to enable these controls, they will be able to:

  • turn off voice chat
  • turn off text chat
  • inability to send or accept friend requests
  • view all the friends on the child’s account
  • restrict certain Riot games
  • disable the entire child’s account

These options will be on a new Parent Portal that can be accessed on Riot’s website. You can add a parent’s email to the account so they can access the Riot Parent Portal with their own login, rather than needing their child’s login.

Riot accidentally rolled out these features for many League of Legends players, which included adults as well. Riot rolled back the Parental Control features for all of League of Legends players, so they could investigate and see where things went wrong with the rollout of these new controls.

A plethora of X users voiced their concerns under Riot’s official rollback announcement, saying that not being able to speak to their team hindered their ability to play the game. Many users were claiming that they are well over the 18-year-old limit that Riot has imposed for these controls and are unsure why their accounts are being affected. Currently, Riot has not provided information regarding the situation anymore or plans moving forward. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and provide any substantial updates as we receive them.
