CD Projekt Red has just announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has now passed 40 million copies sold worldwide. This total includes both the base game and the full Ultimate Edition, which also comes with the Phantom Liberty expansion. “Night City population: 40 million dreamers. Thank you all for helping us reach this amazing milestone!” the studio said.
CD Projekt Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski also commented on the milestone, saying: “40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD PROJEKT does best – creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years. It’s a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe, including the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime arriving this fall.”

The game’s success is even more impressive because of how badly things started. Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 with major technical issues, poor performance, and game-breaking bugs. The problems were so serious that the game was temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store. But CD Projekt Red did not give up on the game. Instead, the studio spent more than $100 million on major updates after launch. The biggest turning points were Update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Over time, players started to trust the game again. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions helped, later patches improved the experience, and new content kept people coming back. However, despite the game’s strong comeback, Michał Nowakowski said the company has not fully completed its recovery from the troubled launch and admitted that some players permanently lost trust in the studio after the game’s release.
In other news, CD Projekt RED has officially confirmed that Project Hadar, its first original intellectual property, has moved past the concept stage and has now progressed into the conceptual prototyping stage, entering pre-production.
