Clair Obscur Director Says Next Game Will Include “Drastic Decisions, People Might Not Like”

After the huge success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, many fans are wondering what Sandfall Interactive will do next. But according to studio CEO and game director Guillaume Broche, the team is not planning to simply repeat the same formula. In a recent interview, Broche made it clear that Sandfall is ready to make “drastic decisions” for its next project, even if some fans do not like them.

Broche explained that the studio does not want to play it safe or chase popular market trends just because Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 became a major, award-winning hit. Instead, Sandfall wants to keep making games in its own way.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Sandfall Interactive did not create Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to please one specific group of players.

He said (via machine translation), “We’re just going to do again what we really enjoyed. If people get on board, great. If not, well, too bad. We didn’t make the first game just to please people, actually. And I think that’s why it worked. So for the next game, we’ll make some drastic decisions too, and maybe people won’t like it and that fine.”

He also explained that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was not made to please one specific group of players. Ironically, that may be one reason why the game connected so strongly with so many people. Broche said he is not focused on whether the next game reaches the same commercial success as the first one. For him, it is more important that the studio stays honest with its creative ideas instead of making safe choices just to sell more copies.

The director also said Sandfall does not want to grow too much, as the team still has a close, friendly feel and does not want to lose that. He concluded, “We have such a close-knit and cool team. It’s really the atmosphere, like a group of friends making a game. It allows us to stay really grounded. We’re going to do it again in our little studio in Montpellier.”
