Atelier Karia Producer Reveals Why the ‘Memories Series’ Moved On From Yumia

After the Atelier Ryza trilogy broke the series’ mold and proved just how popular a recurring protagonist could be, many JRPG fans expected Gust to give Yumia the same treatment. But rather than bringing back the previous heroine, it instead introduces a brand-new one for Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories to carry its latest Memories subseries forward. While some fans speculated the switch reflected a mixed reception to the gunstaff-wielding alchemist, Atelier producer Junzo Hosoi says that wasn’t the case. Speaking in Famitsu magazine issue No. 1954, Hosoi said the decision to introduce Karia instead of keeping Yumia as the main character was actually planned from the beginning.

“Originally, I really wanted to make a Memories series that continued after Atelier Yumia, so we discussed changing the protagonist,” he explained. “Considering the story and gameplay of this game, I thought that having a new story from the perspective of the new protagonist would allow players to enjoy the world and the game even more.”

Still, that doesn’t mean Yumia has disappeared altogether — Gust confirmed that she will eventually join Karia’s expedition. Set two years after Atelier Yumia, the story of Atelier Karia follows the Aladiss Pioneering Team as they prepare the continent for settlement before a mysterious ‘mana withering’ phenomenon threatens the land. During their investigation, amnesiac adventurer Karia, biologist Servio Lector, and knight Fina Rozen discover an underground world and a giant alchemy cauldron, kicking off the game’s plot. Along the way, Yumia joins her team, interested in something ‘troubling’ from Karia’s past.

Although no longer the protagonist, Yumia will eventually join Karia’s group.

Hosoi also stressed that, despite the mysteries surrounding Aladiss and Karia’s party, the developer team wanted the game to recapture the lighthearted atmosphere of classic Atelier games. “This time, while every character has their own mystery, I wanted the overall atmosphere to be bright like the traditional Atelier series,” he said. “So although Kalia, Fina, and Servio all have mysteries surrounding them, they don’t really discuss them in a too-serious manner.” Fans can also expect much more fleshed-out companion stories, with the development team even preparing ‘character-specific endings.’

The change in the main character also ties directly into Atelier Karia‘s biggest gameplay overhaul. While Yumia relies on her gun tricks, Karia is able to adapt to her environment by eating alchemy materials and synthesized items. For example, eating animal-based items might grow beast ears or a tail, giving Karia new exploration skills. Meanwhile, eating Bomb-based items may increase her fire-element or attack abilities. Throwing elemental items could also open new paths or skip battles altogether. “Of course, alchemy has always been a main part of the game, used in battles and quests, but we considered how to ‘make alchemy even more of the core,'” said Hosoi.

“Since this time an alchemy cauldron is introduced, we had to come up with a new synthesis system […] and we completely reworked the item performance and effects accordingly,” added director Taiki Fukui, who is in charge of the alchemy system. Karia also has the unique ability to throw infinite sea urchin-like fruit ‘uni’ during explorations, which will somehow tie into her past.

Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories is currently set for an early 2027 release on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam. For more gaming news and interviews, keep an eye on GameObserver.
