Ubisoft has announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will receive a new update on April 7 with support for the new version of PS5 Pro’s PSSR, promising major improvements and now offering a first comparison through videos. In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, technical architect Nicolas Lopez said that the new version of Sony’s AI-based upscaler allows the game to improve visual quality across all three available graphics modes: Performance, Balanced, and Quality.
In particular, players can expect a sharper and more stable final image, with more accurate reconstruction of finer details and fewer visual artifacts, making it easier to get both smooth gameplay and better image quality. Lopez also explained that the new PSSR handles the more complex scenes in Assassin’s Creed Shadows much better, where elements such as dense vegetation, ray-traced lighting, and dynamic effects put any reconstruction technique under heavy pressure.

Grass moved by the wind, generated by the Atmos system, now appears more defined both up close and from a distance, with blades and leaves keeping clean outlines even while in motion. Particle effects such as smoke, sparks, and dust also appear more stable and consistent, thanks to more accurate handling of motion vectors that avoids artifacts and preserves the cinematic look.
Finally, the technical director stated that, on the ray tracing side, the new PSSR reconstructs reflections, dynamic lighting, and ambient occlusion more accurately, reducing the noise typically seen in “stochastic signals” and delivering a more even image, even in dense and complex lighting scenes.
It’s worth noting that Remedy Entertainment has also updated Alan Wake 2 and Control Ultimate Edition with support for the new PSSR on PS5 Pro, showing that more developers are starting to adopt Sony’s improved upscaling technology.
