Netflix Assassin’s Creed Series Secures Emmy-Winning Director Johan Renck

The Assassin’s Creed franchise is no stranger to multimedia adaptations. From books to film, we’ve seen plenty of the Assassin’s Creed universe outside of the games. Netflix is looking to take the franchise to another level with a dedicated original live-action series, and they just chose an Emmy Award-winning director to helm the series – Johan Renck. The story was first reported by Variety early this morning.

Known for his work directing the prestigious HBO mini-series Chernobyl, Renck has also done some other notable directing work with three episodes of Breaking Bad. This will be his television series directing debut for Netflix, after he directed 2024’s Spaceman movie for the streaming service. The Assassin’s Creed series project has been in development for almost five years, but with casting and creative choices slowly being revealed, we’re getting closer to finally seeing it on our screens.

The Assassin’s Creed series for Netflix will cross historical timelines, much like the games.

Whilst today we learned of the Netflix Assassin’s Creed director, we’ve also recently had news before about other cast members as the series comes together. It will be lead by actor Toby Wallace and actress Lola Petticrew, with Zachary Hart and Laura Marcus as supporting cast members. Details on the plot or the setting are sparse, but Netflix describes the story as “a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions”, continuing on to say “the series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.” Sounds like Assassin’s Creed to us!

There is no release window for Assassin’s Creed just yet, but we’ll be sure to report on it when there is. Check back often to GameObserver for more breaking gaming news coverage just like this.
