The PS5 Pro had something of a mixed launch amongst PlayStation fans. Despite its improved hardware power, some enthusiast gamers noticed a lower quality upscaling technology from the PSSR (that’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) included with PS5 Pro. Now though, Sony has just announced a huge update coming for the technology, and it all starts with Resident Evil Requiem.
The new PSSR “takes a very different approach” according to the PlayStation Blog, who note that the entire algorithm has been changed and updated with the new version of PSSR. This is a result of Sony’s Project Amethyst collaborative project with AMD, using their expertise when it comes to PC-quality upscaling technology and porting it over onto the PS5 Pro. The first game to utilise this upgraded PSSR version is Resident Evil Requiem, and the graphic specialists over at Digital Foundry are full of nothing but praise for the updated upscaling technology.

It doesn’t stop at Resident Evil though, as next month we’ll see “multiple existing games” receive the improved PSSR performance. PS5 Pro owners will also see a new toggle in their Settings menu which can enable or disable the ‘Enhance PSSR Image Quality’ toggle, which when turned on will use the new model with all existing PSSR-supporting games even without an official update. Turning it off is only recommended if there are issues with your game whilst playing, as their enhanced upscaling support is not yet officially supported and tested.
There will be more PS5 Pro upgraded games with enhanced PSSR support coming next month, so be sure to check back often to GameObserver for the latest gaming news written for humans and by humans!
