PlayStation To Stop Producing Physical Disks

PlayStation announced on the morning of July 1st that it will no longer produce physical disks starting in January 2028. The move was made “in response to shifting trends in consumer preferences,” as PlayStation notes in its press release. Starting in January 2028, all new games will only be available digitally on both the PlayStation Store and retailers. All games released before January 2028 will still offer a physical disk option for consumers.

This also implies that the PS6 console will be digital-only, with no physical disk slots. The reaction to PlayStation’s press release in the comments is overwhelmingly negative, with players upset that they will only be able to own licenses, be unable to build collections, and be forced to purchase all digital content from here on out.

PS Vita and PS3 stores will be shut down over the next year.

This is not the only big news that PlayStation decided to release today, though. PlayStation will now be ending support for both the PS3 and the PS Vita. The stores will shut down, and no content will be available for purchase on these devices. However, users will still be able to download previously bought content.

PlayStation will shut down the PlayStation Store on PS3 in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua next month. Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries will follow suit in late 2026, with the global shutdown for both PS3 and PS Vita being scheduled for July 2027.

Many PlayStation fans have logged into PlayStation.Blog to share their negative feelings about both of these announcements, and some are going as far as to say they will never purchase a console or product from PlayStation again.
