Platformer fans are eating so good this year, and the indie developer Fabraz is playing a huge part in one of the genre’s best years ever. Releasing both the critically acclaimed sequel Demon Tides (which got a perfect score from us) in February and the stupendous return of a mascot with Bubsy 4D with Atari in May, to say it’s been a busy period would be an understatement. But it’s far from over. The Black Hole Update for Bubsy 4D is out now. For free!
The DLC brings 15 brand new, difficult levels appearing after beating the game’s final boss. This effectively doubles the number of levels in the game, as the main game, aside from a bonus challenge, consists of three worlds, with five levels each. Alongside bug fixes, the update also adds five new outfits, four new achievements, new dialogues, enemies, hazards, and a special reward for completing the game 100%!
Bubsy 4D marked the return of the oft-maligned character after seven years without a new game, and serves as a tongue-in-cheek semi-sequel to the legendarily panned Bubsy 3D. Though it wasn’t received as warmly as Demon Tides, it generated a lot of buzz following its reveal at the Gamescom Opening Night Live last year and, at the time of writing, has a 92% positive rating on Steam out of 714 reviews, making it one of Atari’s biggest recent success stories from the lineup of their indie partnerships. One of the complaints from critics and players alike was the game’s short length—doubling the amount of content is an undeniably impressive way to address the issue.
Alongside this, Fabraz has been teasing other announcements on the developer’s social pages. After announcing a vinyl release for the Demon Tides soundtrack (the Switch port of which continues to aim for a release this year) in partnership with Lost in Cult, they announced that work on their next game has begun. But that’s not all! In a response to a user on X (formerly Twitter), they also mentioned that more content is coming to the game.
