We’re almost halfway through the year, and you’re still hungry for your next gaming adventure? Then check out our list of ten promising adventure and action titles crafted by independent studios. From unsettling fates to vibrant wholesomeness, there’s still a plethora of indie gems to look forward to in 2026!
IKUMA – The Frozen Compass

Mooneye Studios, the developers of Lost Ember and Farewell North, have a new adventure title in the making! Set to release sometime this year, IKUMA – The Frozen Compass takes players through an atmospheric survival journey in the Arctic. IKUMA is inspired by the failed Franklin expedition of 1845. The game’s two protagonists, cabin boy Sam and his loyal husky Ellie, have become stranded in the cold. Help them survive the unforgiving environment and uncover the mysteries of this breathtaking frozen landscape.
IKUMA combines single-player and co-op elements, allowing players to switch between the two protagonists at any time or play side by side with a friend. This coming-of-age story will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S!
At Fate’s End

Another seasoned indie studio will treat gamers to a new action-adventure this year! Six years after the incredible success of Spiritfarer, Thunder Lotus will make its comeback with At Fate’s End, a story-rich 2D title led by a female protagonist. At Fate’s End explores complex familial relationships in a hand-drawn fantasy setting, where you must choose which siblings to defeat or reconcile with. To do so, the game relies not only on an action-packed combat system. You can also gain the upper hand during confrontations through tactical dialogue and knowledge of your family’s secrets.
In At Fate’s End, your family tree is your skill tree. Every encounter with one of your siblings shapes your destiny. Sprinkle in some narrative puzzles, and there’s not much more action-adventure lovers could ask for! Although the game’s release date has yet to be revealed, you can already wishlist At Fate’s End on Steam and Epic Games, as well as on the Xbox and PlayStation stores.
Portabellows

The next game leans less into action and more into wholesome adventuring! Portabellows is an “adventure of exploration and a collectathon” created by the developer duo of Let Us Cook Games. Their debut title takes place on a quiet island paradise, home to its protagonist Erma. A plane falling out of the sky turns Erma’s retirement upside down. Guide Erma through mushroom-filled scenic landscapes to recover missing plane pieces and help out the island’s new inhabitants.
Moreover, players can look forward to collecting recipes, baking pies, rewarding challenge rooms, and cute outfits. So far, Portabellows has only been announced for Steam, but it can already be wishlisted here!
Voidling Bound

Voidling Bound brings back the action with its unique take on the monster taming genre! This third-person shooter is all about fighting your way through vibrant environments in the shoes of powerful space creatures, called “Voidlings”. Cleanse corrupted planets, defeat challenging enemies, and dive into the treacherous abyss, all whilst growing your collection of Voidlings. Your mighty allies can be obtained by rescuing eggs from infested locations or by crafting them using your gene collection. The game also makes customization a core mechanic through evolution paths and attribute points, as well as customizable body parts and colors.
Voidling Bound is brought to you by Hatchery Games, an indie studio based in Canada featuring a team of former Skylanders developers. The game will make its Steam release on June 9, with a demo already available! Releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 are planned at a later date.
Everlast: Undying Tale

We’re moving from chaotic sci-fi worlds to a colorful fantasy setting! Everlast: Undying Tale is an homage to classic RPGs, adding action-adventure and online co-op elements. Everlast takes us to the world of Sarkis, where we play as a Pyrrhic, a human cursed by Death himself to become immortal. We now must reclaim our humanity while defending the kingdoms of South Umbardom and Northgaelia from the threat of the undead.
Whether you wish to carry these burdens alone or with your friends, one thing’s for certain: an open world packed with real-time battles, valuable resources, and flexible character building awaits! Everlast: Undying Tale is the first title shipped by indie studio InSpades. The game just recently completed its May Playtest and is set to become available on Steam in the third quarter of 2026.
Denshattack!

Denshattack! delivers on a different kind of action. This is an action-adventure 3D platformer centered around gravity-defying Japanese trains! In a universe where most of Japan has been sealed off by the sinister Miraidō corporation, it is your job to lead the rebellion and become a legendary Denshattacker in the process! Your journey will take you through the countryside of Kyushu, the metropolis of Tokyo, and more, as you encounter increasingly bizarre boss battles. And of course, you can find both allies and rivals along the way!
A demo is sadly no longer available, but interested players can already enjoy the full Denshattack! experience on June 17. This flashy train ride was made by Spanish indie developer Undercoders and will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S, and Switch 2.
Rubinite

Next up are a range of pixel-art gems, each pursuing their own take on the action-adventure genre. Starting off with Rubinite, a dark fantasy boss rush action game. It’s bloody, it’s unsettling, and also kind of cute? Ruby, who looks like Red Riding Hood with bunny ears, is on a vengeful quest to reclaim the Scarlet Kingdom. To be successful, she must defeat powerful blood recipients, improve her combat prowess, and persevere until no one remains to stand in her way.
But Ruby’s sword does not easily penetrate her opponents. Instead, Rubinite introduces a unique “Focus” mechanic that identifies enemy weaknesses and enables thrust attacks. If you’re now hungry for some gory revenge yourself, you’re in luck! You only have to wait until July 23 to play Cup Dog Games’ debut game. A Steam demo is also available!
ZWAARD

ZWAARD is a 2D action-adventure with a lush green-and-blue color palette. But don’t let that fool you, because this pixel-art title takes place in a post-apocalyptic world 100 years after a mysterious disaster wiped out most of humanity. As a lone adventurer, you roam vast and open landscapes to uncover secrets of the past and restore hope to this world.
Your only company is your sword, which also serves as the focal point of ZWAARD’s combat and customization system. Players can freely upgrade and modify their trusty sword depending on their playstyle as well as the various materials found across the open world. Whilst indie developer Beleef Studios has yet to share the exact release date for its debut title, players can get a first look at ZWAARD with the Steam demo!
Magical Blush

Our final pixel-art entry is Magical Blush! This is a top-down action-adventure, fusing elemental magic with Metroidvania-style exploration. In Magical Blush, you play as Arnin, a powerful mage and guardian of the Elemental Lords. After Arnin finds her kingdom Wyn devastated, she strives to rescue the survivors and protect the world from the Elemental Lords.
Magical Blush features an intricate elemental combat system, where each element (Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, and Spirit) has strengths, neutrality, and weaknesses. Moreover, players can discover hidden lore to unlock the game’s “true ending”. Magical Blush is the first title developed by Alkacer Game Studio, with a Steam release planned in the third quarter of 2026!
Lunarium

“Our journey begins with parting, and perhaps it will also face parting in the end. […] Even so, will you still come with me?” reads the description of Lunarium, an action-adventure painted in a beautiful yet muted color palette. Lunarium is all about the bond between a light-armored knight, Ave, and a mysterious Starfarer, called Lune. One excels at close-range combat, the other at magical attacks. Players must utilize both skill sets to fight their way through dying realms and overcome environmental obstacles.
In addition to combat trials, you will encounter hidden truths as well as several ways of bolstering your characters. Lunarium will be brought to you sometime this year by indie developer 月相仪Lunarium. A demo is not available as of now, but the studio provides regular updates on the game’s Steam page!
