When Capcom finally lifted the veil on Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s upcoming expansion — much to long-time RPG fans’ excitement — no doubt that one thing immediately stood out. Just like its predecessor, for some reason, the sequel’s big post-launch DLC is also called Dark Arisen. In a recent interview with the Famitsu magazine issue No. 1957, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen director Kento Kinoshita and producer Naoto Oyama explained their reasoning.
“From the beginning, we didn’t decide on the ‘Dark Arisen‘ name,” said Oyama, who listed three different reasons why the team eventually ended up going back to it. “First, its affinity with the story. We didn’t consciously create it that way, but the content we wanted to convey matches very well with the Dark Arisen title.” He then said that, once more, the expansion’s gameplay will revolve around a ‘cycle’ or similar loop. “Repeatedly fighting enemies, collecting powerful appraised gear, upgrading them, and progressing are a game cycle that’s close to the first’s Dark Arisen,” continued Oyama. “And thirdly, when trying to explain the story and action to everyone, Dark Arisen is found to be the easiest to understand.”
Kinoshita echoed the sentiment, pointing out that they received much feedback about players wanting to continue their adventure in the lands of Gransys and Vermund. “This time we felt the same enthusiasm, and together with the reasons Oyama mentioned earlier, since it’s easy for players to remember and evokes a sense of nostalgia, we decided on Dark Arisen,” he explained.

However, fans who expected a repeat of the original Dark Arisen‘s design may be surprised. Instead of returning to the tight dungeon crawl of Bitterblack Isle, the new snowy region of Norgan offers a wider, more open space to play around in. Kinoshita acknowledges the shift. While the original highlights the complexity of the combat element, simply repeating what it did would not bring any sense of ‘freshness or wonder,’ according to him.
“In the previous game, we have managed to create a complete form of hack-and-slash dungeon-crawler. Because of that, just repeating it won’t bring any freshness or wonder, so we wanted to make hack-and-slash within an open field, expanding the areas to explore while progressing the story,” explained Kinoshita. “The advantage is that the larger area allows for more detailed exploration. We’ve also designed it so that subquests can be given in new explorable areas.”
Kinoshita added that the drive behind the whole project came from the players themselves, who have been relentlessly asking for an expansion for the last two years. “From everyone’s voices and opinions, ‘Don’t let it end here — we believe in you,’ was the thought we felt the strongest, so we keep carrying the feeling that we really have to get this right.”
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen expansion will launch for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 9, 2026. For more gaming news and interviews, check out GameObserver.
