Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen To Bring Transmog And ‘Hard Mode’ Instead Of Level Scaling

Dragon’s Dogma 2 might’ve been heavily praised for its combat, but at the end of the day, plenty of fans walked away frustrated by its lack of challenge and end-game content. Capcom has apparently acknowledged the issue and will rectify it with a full-scale expansion built directly from player feedback, Dark Arisen. Kento Kinoshita, who directed the original Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen expansion over a decade ago, talked about it alongside producer Naoto Oyama in the recent Famitsu magazine issue No. 1957 interview.

In the first game, the Dark Arisen expansion is mostly balanced for players who’d already finished with the main story. However, the sequel takes a pretty different approach this time. While Kinoshita said that the recommended level for the new area, Norgan, is level 40 and above, Capcom has added several new methods to level up — or reach the snowy area — much faster.

First, there’s the newly added 12 uniquely crafted dungeons called Lost Rites. According to Kinoshita, the earliest ones can be tackled once you hit level 20, making them a great way to grind levels. The team has also added new pathways and ‘boosted gear’ to help players reach Norgan sooner. Even so, veteran players can dive straight into the new area and still find a real challenge through the brand-new Relic Expedition Cycles mechanic. Relics can be found as loot or hidden during your travel in Norgan; appraising them at a Norgandian Settlement could unlock special gear with bonus defensive and offensive skills.

“As a sidenote, it’s possible to access Norgan from early in the story. Specifically, the quest can be accepted once you arrive at Venworth,” added Oyama. “The Lost Rites are scattered evenly throughout the main story area […] but as you progress further, we have arranged more dungeons with higher recommended levels and more bite to them.”

On the topic of post-main-game difficulty, Kinoshita admitted that the Dragon’s Dogma team decided not to implement a level-scaling feature just like in the previous game, as players’ opinions on it are split. Instead, they’re ‘considering’ adding a Hard Mode that would be selectable even on a brand new playthrough. However, other than that, they are still keeping it a secret. “Please wait for further announcements regarding the release and other details,” added Oyama.

That’s not all the surprise, as Oyama also confirmed that Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen will have a transmogrifier feature — the series’ second, after it was implemented in Dragon’s Dogma Online first. Letting players keep their stats while changing their gear’s looks, similar to Monster Hunter World‘s layered armor, is something that fans and RPG players have wanted since the original. “As you progress through your adventure in Norgan, that feature will become usable,” he revealed. Again, though, Kinoshita is keeping things under wraps for later. “We can’t give you the details yet, but there are gameplay elements that work as unlock conditions.”

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen expansion promises to provide a substantial amount of exploration and combat to satisfy any fan of action RPGs.

As for how long Dark Arisen will take to complete, Oyama has an answer. “We predict that completing the additional main scenario will take around 15 to 20 hours,” he explained. Lost Rites, he said, should provide an additional 30 minutes to one hour each, on top of the base game’s 30-40 hours of gameplay. “Add to that the original Dragon’s Dogma 2, and the total volume will be quite substantial.” That’s 72 hours for a full Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen playthrough in total.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen expansion will launch for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 9, 2026. For more gaming news and interviews, check out GameObserver.
