Sony Confirms PS5 And PS Portal Price Increase Starting April 2

After rumors that appeared earlier, Sony has now confirmed a price increase for the PlayStation 5 and PS Portal worldwide. Starting next month, prices will go up by as much as $150. The new official prices in U.S. are $649.99 for the PS5, $599.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition, $899.99 for the PS5 Pro, and $249.99 for the PS Portal. These prices will take effect from April 2, so the change happens next week.

Sony explained the increase by pointing to higher production costs linked to the current global hardware market. Issues such as rising memory prices and raw material costs have played a role. “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally,” Sony said in a statement on the official PlayStation Blog. “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”

PlayStation 5 prices rise by up to $150 depending on the model.

The price increase had already been mentioned in a rumor the day before, which suggested the console could cost up to $100 more, and this has now been confirmed. Prices are also rising in other regions, including the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan. Here are the new prices in those regions:

U.K.

  • PS5 – £569.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – £519.99
  • PS5 Pro – £789.99
  • PS Portal – £219.99

Europe

  • PS5 – €649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – €599.99
  • PS5 Pro – €899.99
  • PS Portal – €249.99

Japan

  • PS5 – ¥97,980
  • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥89,980
  • PS5 Pro – ¥137,980
  • PS Portal – ¥39,980

Sony earlier said it would try not to raise console prices and instead make up the extra cost through games or services like PlayStation Plus. However, it now appears that increasing hardware prices was necessary. This also raises questions about future consoles, as with the PS5 getting more expensive nearly six years after launch and the PS5 Pro reaching $900, it is unclear how much a next-generation console like the PS6, expected around 2027 or 2028, could cost.
