If you were planning to upgrade your PlayStation 5 storage, you may want to think twice. SanDisk has launched its new Optimus GX PRO 850P SSD range for PS5, and the 8TB model costs a huge $2,959.99.
The new drive is officially licensed by PlayStation and comes in four sizes. The 1TB version costs $380, the 2TB model is $760, the 4TB version is $1,500, while the top 8TB model reaches almost $3,000. To put that into perspective, the 8TB SSD costs more than three PS5 Pro consoles. The high price is another sign of the ongoing memory and component crisis. SSD prices have risen sharply over the last year as demand for storage continues to grow, especially because of AI-related technologies.

As mentioned earlier, the SSD is officially licensed for PlayStation, which means it includes custom PlayStation-branded heatsinks designed specifically for the PS5 and PS5 Pro. However, that official branding comes at a cost. Buyers are paying significantly more compared to SanDisk’s nearly identical non-licensed PC versions.
Nonetheless, the SSD does come with some impressive features. The 8TB model can hold up to 200 games, based on an average game size of 36GB, while also delivering read speeds of up to 7,300 MB/s. SanDisk says the drive is rated for 4,800 TBW and is backed by a five-year warranty. For players who want their entire game library stored on their PS5, the Optimus GX PRO offers plenty of space and high-end performance. However, the only catch is its price, with the 8TB version costing nearly $3,000.
In other news, Sony recently increased the prices of all PS5 models by as much as $150, which caused sales in the UK to fall by 50%, allowing Xbox Series X|S to nearly match PlayStation sales in May. For more PlayStation-related coverage, keep checking GameObserver.
