Monster Hunter Stories 3: How To Beat The Feral Rakna-Kadaki Boss Fight

As your Riders and their trusty Monsties traverse the Death’s Maw, they are in for an encounter with a truly fierce monster. The Feral Rakna-Kadaki in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is not the sort of bug that can be easily squished under heel. In fact, its mandatory boss fight acts as a significant roadblock for your party. This guide will give you all the tips you need to swat that monster away like the overgrown spider it is!

Guide To Feral Rakna-Kadaki’s Resistances

Feral Rakna-Kadaki is especially vulnerable to thunder element damage.

For a battle as challenging as this one, it pays to play around the monster’s resistances. If you ever wish to examine these for yourself, simply open your menu and navigate to the Ranger Files tab. From here, you can open your Monsterpedia and find the resistances of any monsters you’ve tangled with. Unfortunately, before you beat the monster, it will only note the elements and statuses that you have tried against the monster, so experimentation is typically required.

But I’m not here to keep any secrets from you! Feral Rakna-Kadaki is extremely resistant to fire element damage. Rocking up to that fight for the first time with Ratha and my Ajarakan weapons did not go down well! They are also resistant to water element damage, as well as the poison, burn, and blastblight status effects.

On the other hand, Feral Rakna-Kadaki is extremely vulnerable to thunder element damage, which will be your secret weapon. Alternatively, they’re also very weak to the darkness status effect. Other weaknesses include dragon element damage and the paralysis, sleep, and bleed status effects (and, believe you me, I was exploiting that paralysis weakness).

How To Prepare For The Feral Rakna-Kadaki Fight

For my gear, I prioritized weapons that dealt thunder element damage.

Now that you know your enemy’s weaknesses, you can prepare to exploit them! And, if you’ve only been following story quests and some of the side missions, it is likely you will have to do a little grinding to be battle-ready for this fight. My Princess and her Monsties were both around Level 35 when we finally defeated our foe. Luckily, the Death’s Maw is chock full of monsters to test your mettle against. I personally tussled with many Odogarons!

But you can also level up plenty as you get any materials you need for your gear. Ajarakan Armor is perfect for the fight, but, as I mentioned before, my fire element damage Ajarakan weapons were never going to fare well against Rakna-Kadaki’s brutal fire resistance. Instead, I won the battle with the Khezu Shock Sword, Khezu Horn, and the Arko Nulo Yellow bow. Naturally, these all take advantage of Rakna-Kadaki’s weakness to thunder element damage. But what if you don’t have the parts?

The Arko Nulo Yellow bow primarily requires Bnahabra parts, from the small flying insect monsters found throughout Monster Hunter Stories 3, including in the starting area of Azuria. The Khezu weapons, however, require parts from Khezus, as the name suggests. If you’re in need of some Khezus to fight – for equipment or leveling up purposes – head to the Cataracts Catavan Stand. From there, head through the waterfall shown in the image below to enter the Frozen Grotto. There should be plenty of Khezus to farm in here!

Which Allies To Bring Into The Feral Rakna-Kadaki Fight

While Thea and Kagachi could be a good choice, Ogden and Chirpy won me the battle!

Now that you have appropriate gear sorted, all that’s left to do is decide who you’re bringing into the fight with you. Regarding Monsties, I leveled up my Red Khezu, taking advantage of their thunder element damage and potential for paralysis. When it comes to your companions, I would recommend either Thea and her Tobi-Kadachi, or Ogden and his Pukei Pukei.

Thea and Kagachi seem like the obvious pick since, with her Kadachi Strikebow, both of them will be dishing out thunder damage to the extreme. This is, in fact, what they are perfect for, and you can deal a heck of a lot of damage very quickly with these two in your party. The downside is that Tobi-Kadachi is weak to water element damage, which Rakna-Kadaki specializes in, meaning they have a hard time staying alive in the long run. My best run before my victory was a Thea and Tobi-Kadachi pairing, so I do believe they are very viable if you have a preference for them, but they can sometimes struggle.

My victory duo, though, was Ogden and Chirpy. I put Ogden on his Bleeding Bopper for the thunder damage and, with the help of Chirpy, the two of them assisted in making sure Rakna-Kadaki was locked down in near-constant paralysis. Whichever pairing you decide to go with, you can change them and their equipped weapons from the ‘Change Battle Allies’ section of the Party menu.

How To Approach The Feral Rakna-Kadaki Fight

While in the initial phase, focus on taking out the Rachnoids as soon as you can.

Once you’ve gained enough experience, have equipment suited for the battle, and pick the allies that are going to support you the best against this foe, the fight itself doesn’t have too much complexity to it. The first thing you will likely notice is that Feral Rakna-Kadaki is flanked by a pair of Rachnoids. You may be tempted to ignore them, but they deal deceptively high damage and need taking care of first, as quickly as possible, so as not to overwhelm your party.

Once they are down, you can focus on Feral Rakna-Kadaki itself! Be sure to avoid the Blightstone on its Back Spikes (Ogden will possibly clear that for you), but otherwise just wear down its parts as usual. During this stage, it will use Technical Attacks, so be sure to counter with Power Attacks.

While Feral Rakna-Kadaki is in its cocoon form, focus on targeting the cocoon with a piercing weapon.

Eventually, Rakna-Kadaki will cover itself in a silk cocoon, changing things up a bit. The cocoon will become a new target and should be focused down as quickly as possible with a piercing weapon. In this state, it will start using Speed Attacks, so Technical Attacks will be needed to counter it. You may find that Rakna-Kadaki returns to its original approach after this stage, but don’t falter, as you have it on the ropes! Just take out the Rachnoids again, and finish that spider off!
