Winter Burrow is a cozy crafting game developed by Pine Creek Games and published by Noodlecake. You are a mouse who used to live in a burrow in the countryside but moved to the city. After your parents pass away, you return to your burrow that has fallen into disrepair. With the help of your aunt and some new friends, you revitalize your burrow and explore your old home. It’s been years and the countryside has changed, with enemies and a winter storm hampering your efforts.
Some survival games eschew a story in favor of gameplay, but Winter Burrow seamlessly combines the two. Your main character has suffered great loss after moving from their burrow and the characters you meet are not necessarily tragic, but have encountered troubles in their lives. After experiencing your own story of loss, your character is more than happy to help. Your actions not only revitalize the burrow but also improve the lives of others around you.

The combination of story and gameplay motivates you to help the characters you meet. You want to know how someone actually feels despite putting up a strong front. As you help characters out, you get a sense of their real struggles and how they deal with it. These characters also help you on your journey, giving you a reason to pursue their narratives. It’s engaging and keeps you tied to the game if only to see how the story ends.
Exploration takes place in a snowy area where you are looking for materials and food. After a tutorial that sets up your home base and gives you some tools, you begin exploring your new environment. You can’t stay outside too long as the low temperature drains your warmth and eventually your health – every journey must include methods to keep yourself warm or you won’t make much progress.

The temperature limitation forces you to make the most of each trip outside. Do you spend your time exploring new areas or gather food for the future? Without a clear plan, you get sidetracked and won’t make much progress. You can warm yourself up with certain food and drink items or use firepits to create a fire, but these don’t ward off the cold forever and you must still work quickly. Factoring the cold in your exploration immerses you in the gameplay, making sure you prepare before you leave the house.
However Winter Burrow’s lack of a map makes exploration difficult to track. You have several areas that look similar and often no easy way to tell where you are. Without a good memory, you waste valuable time figuring out where you are or locating your destination. It also doesn’t help that some characters give vague directions or no clues for your next goal. Wasting time is almost mandatory as you struggle to find out where to go.

Fortunately, Winter Burrow’s cozy gameplay mitigates the threat of wasted time. You can always scrounge up basic food items and build your supply for a long trip. Tools never break and your clothes always provide some protection. It’s difficult to undo progress and even if you lose all your health, only a few hours pass before you start again. As harsh as the environment may be, you can take all the time in the world to do what you like.
What makes this difficult is the fact that your objectives are often unclear. Gathering food and harvesting materials is obvious but you soon realize you need better tools. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t provide much direction on where you get these tools or who you should seek out. Much of this is found by chance while exploring. It’s possible to get stuck simply because you don’t speak to a character more than once, believing they just repeat text. Clearer objectives would help save time and reduce confusion.

Coupled with the fact that navigation is difficult, Winter Burrow becomes a difficult game to progress as sometimes you know that you need better tools to succeed, but you don’t know who gives you the recipe. Even if you do know the character, you may need to speak with them multiple times for a clue. It’s easy to get frustrated because there are few clues on what you should do next. While it’s fun to stumble on a new adventure, the excitement disappears when you don’t know what you are doing.
Winter Burrow provides a fun survival experience with few penalties for failure. It’s easy to play and has powerful stories that touch your heart. Getting better equipment is rewarding since it feels like you have made progress. But the lack of a map makes it easy to get lost and objectives are often unclear. However, while the game stumbles in some areas, its fundamentals are solid enough to give you a memorable experience.
