Some of the most complex crimes involve several layers and it’s your job as a detective to dig through them for a complex truth buried in those layers. Feline Forensics And The Meowseum Mystery presents one such layered mystery. Developed and published by Nobody Crown, you are solving a theft and murder in an art museum. While the answers seem obvious at first, a little digging quickly reveals there’s more than meets the eye.
You are a cat detective assigned to a murder-and-theft case at a local art museum. The typical trappings of a mystery are there with suspects, a body, and evidence of foul play. As you make inquiries and investigate the crime scene, it quickly becomes clear that there’s more to the story. Using your deductive skills and the assistance of the police department, you unravel the deception and discover what’s really going on.

The mystery itself is ordinary but what I appreciated about Feline Forensics And The Meowseum Mystery was its generous use of light humor. Whether it was the quick response of police analysis or witty remarks from characters, it made the atmosphere more casual and had me chuckling a few times. None of this detracts from the fact that crimes were committed, but it gave the cast more character in my eyes. This and also the fact that rather than just being interchangeable animals, they all had reasons for being in the museum and their outlook on life.
Game length isn’t too long, preventing the mystery from overstaying its welcome. You have enough time to establish the facts, meet the cast/suspects, and explore the museum. Once you put the relevant pieces together, it’s not too difficult to solve the mystery and finish the game. I liked having a short mystery that wrapped up its loose ends quickly without drawing out the time.

The overall difficulty leans towards the high side and that is a double-edged sword. On one hand, I liked having to put the clues together myself and needing to pay attention to every word. There are also alternate endings that allow for three possibilities when labeling the culprit, so even if I felt I didn’t have the complete picture, the game allowed for a reasonable resolution.
The difficulty for inputting clues is especially challenging and if you aren’t attentive, it’s easy to miss some things. Part of the gameplay involves creating summaries for events to consolidate information and pass in-game time. Your job is to fill in the blanks of these summaries to complete them. There are many blanks to fill out and several of them are side-by-side. Your only hints for getting these right are color-coded lines that I didn’t find too helpful.

However, even if you know the events in your head, you need to input the specific words. These are not always easy to figure out, especially when your interpretation of events is valid but not accepted by the game. Some alternative interpretations could be accepted, but even then the game doesn’t give you much room for error. Even with hints, I found that it could be quite time-consuming to guess every correct word.
There are objects to find and examine for clues, though this often involved being meticulous and I found it easy to pass by parts of the museum with important information unless I inspected everything. Even rotating evidence for clues often required great precision and without a controller’s vibration for help, I would’ve missed several answers. Some characters also had important information to share, but the speech bubbles indicating them often appeared late.

Feline Forensics And The Meowseum Mystery presents a layered mystery that’s enjoyable to dive through. Light humor eases the tension of the mystery and the game is generous with hints. However, some mysteries are difficult to solve without any guidance and that breaks the immersion. However, if you want a mystery game with light-hearted fun that doesn’t overstay its welcome, this is a good choice.
