Obsidian Reportedly Stops Avowed 2 Development To Work On New Fallout Game

Obsidian Entertainment may be returning to Fallout, and that is big news for fans of the series. According to a recent Bloomberg report, Obsidian has cancelled work on Avowed 2 so it can focus on a brand-new Fallout game.

The new Fallout project will be led by Josh Sawyer, Obsidian’s studio design director. Sawyer is best known for directing Fallout: New Vegas, one of the most loved games in the series. Before this change, he was working on a different, unannounced RPG that was said to be very close to Fallout in both gameplay and theme, but not part of the Fallout name.

Avowed 2 was meant to be the sequel to the 2025 fantasy RPG Avowed. Reports say the project was moving along well and was planned to be shown next year. However, Xbox’s new company strategy has now pushed the game aside. A small team is still staying on Avowed 2 to keep its work and assets safe, just in case Microsoft decides to bring it back later.

This change comes during a major shake-up at Xbox under CEO Asha Sharma. Obsidian has reportedly lost around 25% of its staff, as Xbox shifts its money and teams toward its biggest and most profitable series. Even with Avowed 2 stopping production, Obsidian is not stopping all its other work. The studio is still expected to continue live updates for Grounded 2 and future DLC for The Outer Worlds 2. In other news, Minecraft reportedly helped fund Xbox Game Studios for years, with its huge profits supporting other Microsoft gaming projects while the franchise itself may have been underfunded.
