New Danganronpa 2×2 Info Shows Who Survives The Early Game

The September 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct broadcast included the long-awaited January 2027 release date reveal for Danganronpa 2×2, which includes both a re-release of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and a new story called “Slayhem Mode.” The trailer featured in the direct, as well as several screenshots later shared by developer Spike Chunsoft, includes some tantalizing new hints about what exactly Slayhem Mode might entail. Careful analysis of new materials hints at which characters might feature prominently in Slayhem Mode, as well as some who might just make it out alive.

A Brand-New Character Shakes Up The Story

The most surprising reveal in the Direct was the appearance of a totally new character, a currently unnamed person with white hair and yellow clothes. Who this person is, and what role they will play in the game, remains a total mystery. However, a screenshot showing Kazuichi Soda standing next to a large gold-colored boat seems to imply that said boat is how the new character arrives on Jabberwock Island. Did they come there deliberately, or were they shipwrecked? It’s too early to tell.

Notably, the new logo for Danganronpa 2×2 shows the character in a position and pose that parallels Chiaki Nanami, a prominent secondary character in the original game. This definitely seems to indicate that the new character will play a major role, and possibly aid protagonist Hajime Hinata in his investigations much like Chiaki does. Several characters are also “grouped” beside the new face: Akane Owari, Nekomaru Nidai, Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, Peko Pekoyama, Mahiru Koizumi, and Hiyoko Saionji. This could just be a design decision, but it could also hint that these characters will have significant interaction with the newcomer or play a major role in Slayhem Mode.

New Info Hints At Who Lives – At Least At First

Speculation regarding Danganronpa 2×2 has, of course, focused heavily on who the game’s victims and culprits will be. New screenshots shared by Spike Chunsoft, as well as scenes appearing in the Direct trailer, seem to confirm that at least a few characters won’t be the first victim.

Kazuichi Soda, Chiaki Nanami, Mahiru Koizumi, and Mikan Tsumiki all appear in a screenshot that clearly comes from a Slayhem Mode trial. This seemingly disqualifies them from being the game’s first victim. In addition, two pieces of evidence called “Fuyuhiko’s Account” and “Nekomaru’s Account” appearing in Hajime’s evidence list mean that the Ultimate Yakuza and Ultimate Team Manager likely live to see at least one trial. Finally, Nagito Komaeda is shown talking to Hajime in a scene where “Homicide,” a track that usually plays during the post-murder investigation, is listed as the background music.

Most notably, a screenshot shared with the press by Spike Chunsoft features a class trial where Hajime confronts Ultimate Nurse Mikan Tsumiki with a truth bullet reading “Monokuma File #5.” If this screenshot is accurate, it could actually be quite the late-game spoiler – Monokuma File #5 could come from either the fourth or fifth class trial, depending on whether any double murders occurred that required separate files. Mikan lasting deep into the game would be quite interesting, as her talent allows her to perform detailed autopsies, often finding out more information about the time or cause of death than Monokuma is willing to provide.

Finally, on the continued subject of Mikan, a screenshot of her participating in a Scrum Debate – a mechanic introduced in Danganronpa V3 that will be appearing in 2×2 – shows a crossed-out death portrait behind her featuring someone with a large, round face. There are two large-faced characters in the cast, Teruteru Hanamura and Byakuya Togami, and the portrait is not clear enough to show who it might be. However, it is possible that this screenshot is from the remade version of the original Danganronpa 2, and that Scrum Debates will be added to those trials and not just Slayhem Mode.

Marketing For Danganronpa Has Lied Before

While these new screenshots do seem to reveal some crucial information, one thing is important to keep in mind – Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka and publisher Spike Chunsoft have provided deliberately false marketing materials in the past. Screenshots shared before the release of Danganronpa V3 were edited to make it appear as though the first victim participated in at least one class trial, leading to large amounts of incorrect theorizing. It’s certainly possible that the same thing could be happening now, so take everything that comes out pre-release with a grain of salt. In particular, that shot of Chiaki in the trial could easily be her static overworld sprite edited on top of someone else’s, hiding a twist that Hajime’s original sidekick bites it early this time around.

Fortunately, there are only a few months to go before definitive answers arrive. Danganronpa 2×2 will release on January 14, 2027, and Spike Chunsoft has confirmed that players will be able to jump right into Slayhem Mode from the beginning.
