Tekken 8 Announces Yujiro Hanma As Season 3’s Final Character

Tekken 8 continues to gain back momentum. The weekend from May 22 to 25 provided fighting game fans with a lot of excitement thanks to the return of Combo Breaker, one of the most celebrated tournament events in the scene. Not every company brought a trailer to the show, but Bandai Namco did, and it was a big one. Yujiro Hanma from the legendary martial arts animanga series Baki is joining the Tekken 8 roster this Winter.

Three months ago, we learned three of the four characters that will become playable during its third season: Kunimitsu, releasing May 27; Bob, releasing this Summer; and Roger Jr., releasing in Fall. Though all three are returning fan-favorites that brought back some excitement for the game alongside a positively received patch not long after (though not without a negatively received one before it), the game needed a lot more than just that to regain momentum following the disastrous reception of its second season.

The inclusion of Yujiro might be their golden ticket, with 900k views on the Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s YouTube trailer alone, passing the views of the Season 3 Trailer within less than half a day. He’s a character that, while not the most-anticipated possible guest for the series (cough Tifa cough), he was undeniably one of the popular picks as part of guest character discussions for many years. The Baki series has been steadily gaining popularity in the past decade thanks to a new anime adaptation and the spread of videos showcasing the insanity of its encounters and the physiques of its characters, but it always had a dedicated fanbase that stood by it being way more than just a meme.

Yujiro was a huge part of that rise. Known as “The Ogre” (a title already bestowed upon a different Tekken villain not featured in Tekken 8 as of the announcement), he’s the absent father to the protagonist before they reconnect through an iconic fight and the following, still ongoing rivalry. He’s a… controversial character to say the least. I won’t list everything he’s ever done here, but one thing you may have seen on social media is his interactions with various U.S. presidents. At a certain point in the manga’s run, Yujiro has made it a tradition to visit the parody versions of newly elected Chief Executives to accept their peace talks as the strongest creature in the series’ universe. In 2025, he had an aggressive and uncomfortable meeting with “Elom” and “President Tramp,” and that’s putting it lightly.

It’s scenes like that, among many other eccentricities, that led to the meteoric rise in Baki’s popularity among overseas audiences, an incredibly popular Netflix anime revival starting from 2018, and the subsequent appreciation of the source material. It all set the stage for this: Yujiro’s first official guest appearance in a fighting game since 2007’s Garōden Breakblow: Fist or Twist (based on another celebrated manga series Garōden), and his second appearance in the video game space in recent times following the 2025 Punch-out!!-style game Baki Hanma: Blood Arena.

What are your thoughts on the current state of Tekken 8? If you haven’t played following the changes made in Season 2, will you return to play as Yujiro Hanma or any of the other Season 3 characters? Let us know, and stay tuned to GameObserver!
