Bungie Reportedly Isn’t Making Destiny 3, And Layoffs Expected

We reported earlier that Destiny 2 was coming to an end, following Bungie’s shock announcement regarding the conclusion of the long-running and beloved live service. Now though, additional information and context has been unearthed by Bloomberg’s highly reputable industry insider Jason Schreier, and it’s not looking good for the studio.

According to the breaking report, insiders familiar with the studio’s plans report that Destiny 3 is not in development, with the team behind Destiny 2 actually not having any new projects lined up as of yet. They also reportedly don’t plan to enter production on a Destiny 3 any time soon either, including after the end of the team’s Destiny 2‘s support next month.

Destiny 2‘s most recent Star Wars-themed expansion struggled to engage players.

Unfortunately, according to Schreier and his contacts, Bungie is additionally planning a “significant number of layoffs” following the conclusion of Destiny 2. Staff are currently trying to pitch new projects and begin development on other games, including Destiny titles, yet none have been greenlit as of yet.

Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 billion back in 2022, but their investment has been one they’ve struggled to justify at points. This has already resulted in rounds of layoffs, along with the company taking impairment losses indicating a reduced perceived value of the business, but it appears that more layoffs will follow with Destiny 2 being out of the picture.

The extraction shooter launched earlier this year, and has considerably underperformed given the scale of the project and its declining player base.

We’ll be sure to follow up on the latest developments over at Bungie as they come, from the conclusion of Destiny 2 to their ongoing support of Marathon. Be sure to check back often to GameObserver for more breaking gaming news.
