The launch of Starfield on the PlayStation 5 was a big deal. Starting as an Xbox Series X|S exclusive, Microsoft allowed Bethesda to make the leap to a multi-platform release with the PlayStation 5 launch on April 7, coinciding with the release of the Terran Armada paid DLC expansion and the Fast Lanes free update.
It appears that PS5 release has paid off, as new data from Circana via Mat Piscatella has shown that Starfield was the best-selling game of the week ending April 11 following its PS5 launch. It led in both physical and digital dollar sales, making it the highest earning full game for the week, and marks the first time Starfield has topped the chart since September 2023 following its initial release.
This is a huge win for Microsoft, but also puts them in a strange situation in terms of future decision-making. The Xbox fan base and management have expressed interest in returning to console exclusivity for its titles, whilst the sales of Starfield exploding on Sony’s rival console are likely a strong indicator that perhaps multi-platform releases will earn Microsoft the most from software sales.

It’s also a success for Bethesda, who put a lot into Starfield but had largely mixed responses from both critics and audiences alike. The Fast Lanes free patch and Terran Armada paid DLC gave existing fans more content to dive into, but also made the game more feature-rich for those investing into it for the first time on PS5.
The Fast Lanes update expanded on every area of the Starfield experience, from new options for space traversal to additional quests, vehicles and buildable outpost parts. Meanwhile, Terran Armada adds a new narrative, companion, rewards and repeatable activities, and is included in the Premium Edition of the game or purchasable separately.
