Yesterday saw the launch of Overwatch Season 2: Summit, along with the accompanying release of an upgraded Switch 2 version of the hero shooter. Despite promising an experience with cleaner and crisper visuals running at 60 frames per second (FPS), it appears Blizzard accidentally left the cap on the frame rates. The game still runs at 30 FPS, the same cap as the original Switch release, which disappointed many on the much-anticipated season launch day.
Thankfully, Blizzard are aware of the issue and are promising a fix. Over on their Known Issues page on the official Blizzard forums, they said “we are aware of an issue with the FPS limit on the Nintendo Switch 2 being lower than intended. We are working on a patch to resolve this issue.”

The clarification that the FPS is “lower than intended” is a good sign that this might just be accidental from Blizzard, and not the hardware struggling. The performance and visuals are so similar to the Switch right now that, over on social media, fans thought that the company had uploaded “the wrong files” and had simply relisted the original Switch version of Overwatch but with a Switch 2 label.
It was only on Monday that Blizzard announced Overwatch was coming to the Switch 2, with their initial promise being “better visuals, higher fidelity audio, and up to 60 FPS in both docked and handheld mode.” Whilst they never promised a constant 60 FPS experience, the currently released version is capped at 30 FPS, meaning there’s no possibility of it ever getting as high as they intended.
We’ll be sure to report when Overwatch release the fixed version of their Switch 2 patch, along with all other ongoing developments in Overwatch Season 2: Summit. If you’re interested in the latest gaming news written for humans and by humans, then check back often to GameObserver for more.
