How To Unlock Night Mode (Hard Mode) In Mortal Shell 2

Mortal Shell 2 has a Night Mode for players looking for an even harder challenge, but unlocking it is not as simple as changing the difficulty in the settings. This mode makes enemies much tougher, offers better rewards, and even adds new areas and content that are not available in the normal game.

To unlock Night Mode, you need to find a special item called the Gloombound Flame and use it to summon an NPC named Thestus at Marrow Keep. Once Thestus appears, you can ask him to “Call forth the Night” and switch the world into its harder nighttime version.

First, complete the prologue until you reach Marrow Keep, which is the main tower and hub in Mortal Shell 2. Once there, take the central lift all the way to the top of the tower. At the top, use the teleport beacon to travel to Widow’s Overlook, also known as Widow’s Keep. This is the first area you can explore in the Fainweald region.

From the beacon, follow the sloping path downhill until you reach a muddy graveyard area. Here, you will come across a roaming mini-boss called the Great Arbiter of Flesh. You do not have to defeat the Great Arbiter of Flesh to get the item. The Gloombound Flame is sitting on a ritual altar directly behind him, so you can sneak around the mini-boss or simply run past him and grab the flame.

Once you have the Gloombound Flame, fast-travel back to Marrow Keep and take the lift to the top of the tower again. Look around the side of the tower, and you will find an unlit lantern or brazier sitting on a table. Interact with it to place the Gloombound Flame and light it.

Lighting the lantern will summon Thestus. Speak to him and choose the dialogue option “Call forth the Night” to immediately activate Night Mode. You can speak to Thestus again whenever you want to switch back to the normal daytime mode. This means you can freely turn Night Mode on and off instead of being locked into the harder difficulty.

It’s worth noting that Night Mode changes much more than simply making the world dark. Enemies become much more difficult to fight, with more health, harder hits, and faster movement. However, there is a benefit to taking on the extra difficulty. Defeating enemies gives you more Gold Coins and Gloom, with Night Mode also giving you 20% more Gloom.

Night Mode also adds new areas and content that are not available in the normal game, including the Shrine of Sorrows, a first-person dungeon with a strong survival horror feel. There is also a new NPC in the Forgotten Tower who gives you an important item for taking on the game’s final boss. Another addition is an Outpost with a new merchant, which can be found on the left side of the Outskirts of Mammon after changing biome and crossing some ruins.

All of this makes Night Mode more than just a harder version of Mortal Shell 2. It brings tougher enemies and better rewards while also giving players new areas and extra content to discover.
