Developer Gaister Studios is releasing Heroes of Magic and Steel for Steam on May 28, 2026. Gameplay involves tactical combat on hexagonal grids, deck-building, and strategic team formation. You are constantly making decisions to ensure that you stay ahead of your opponents, and every card in your deck matters. The game is inspired by titles such as XCOM, Slay the Spire, and Heroes of Might and Magic.
You can play an Adventure Mode that provides a more accessible experience for casual players and those new to the game. If you have more experience, you can dive into regular gameplay runs to experience the full thrill. A card cycling mode is also available for those who want faster gameplay. No matter what you choose, there’s a narrative displayed through comic illustrations that illuminates the world and the characters living in it. Each run you complete provides a new comic, providing an incentive to find them all to truly understand the lore.

Lucas Gamarra, the game’s designer, commented on what makes the game stand out: “Heroes of Magic and Steel was never designed to be just a traditional deckbuilder. Our idea was always to create a deep strategy game, where team building is just as important as the cards used during battles.” Players must adapt to the challenges they face in each run, as the tide can turn if you are careless.
Each run pits you against a different faction that uses a different strategy to bring you down. Some factions exploit your mistakes more than others, so you must learn how to avoid them. Changing your team and experimenting is important if you want any chance of making it past the first few enemy groups. You can try the demo on the Steam page or wishlist the game to be notified of its release. For more news on indie game releases, keep checking GameObserver!
