Rocksteady Helped Develop Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight

The LEGO games make their grand return with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, available with three-day advanced access starting tomorrow for Deluxe Edition owners or releasing this Friday (May 22) for all other gamers. Review copies have already been shipped and completed by many, and they revealed an exclusive bit of information about the game’s creation – Rocksteady Studios is credited as a co-developer.

Rocksteady are widely known for their work on the Batman: Arkham games, along with their most recent 2024 release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The combat in the new LEGO Batman title has been thought to be clearly inspired by the Arkham series of games since its reveal, but the reveal of Rocksteady as a co-developer makes this even clearer. It was first shared by Video Games Chronicle, who spotted the Rocksteady listing in the credits.

Arkham combat inspirations have been apparent from the reveal.

It’s not the entire Rocksteady team that worked on LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, but it does include 24 key figures from a producer and designer to artists and programmers. As VGC notes, Warner Bros. Games Montreal, known for Gotham Knights, are also credited for their work on the project.

The new LEGO Batman looks bigger and batter (sorry) than ever, with a focused cast of only seven playable characters as compared to past entries having hundreds, but with deeper focus on their unique powers and technology. The story follows Bruce Wayne’s Batman all the way through from his origins to the fully-fledged hero we know him as today.

The city of Gotham is recreated in open-world LEGO form.

It’s also an open-world adventure, with Gotham City built from the ground up in the classic LEGO game style that merges the grim and gritty city with the standard comedy and charm we’d expect from the Traveller’s Tales titles.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 19 with Deluxe Edition purchases or May 22 for standard edition owners. A future release on Nintendo Switch 2 is planned at an unspecified later date.
