Crimson Desert is finally available and can now be played on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. After its first patch, the game’s reception has slightly improved, with its reviews now listed as “Mostly Positive” on Steam. However, the game has recently drawn attention over concerns about the use of AI-generated artwork, with developer Pearl Abyss now issuing an official response.
Reports began circulating after players noticed unusual in-game paintings, which some believed resembled AI-generated images. These findings were shared online on platforms like Reddit, and the game faced a wave of criticism as a result. Some of the images that drew attention showed clear visual issues, including a horse appearing with three legs, faces that looked incomplete, and scenes that did not seem logically structured. These issues raised questions about how such assets made it into the final release.

In a statement addressing the situation on X (formerly Twitter), Pearl Abyss said that “some 2D visual props were created” using AI tools during early development. The studio explained that these were meant to help “explore tone and atmosphere” and were not intended to remain in the final version. However, the developer acknowledged that some of these assets were unintentionally included in the release. The studio said this was “not in line with our internal standards” and took responsibility for the mistake.
The company also admitted it should have been more open about using AI tools, stating it “should have clearly disclosed” this during development, and apologized for the lack of transparency. In addition, Pearl Abyss confirmed it is now reviewing all in-game assets and will replace any affected content in upcoming patches. The studio added that updates will be rolled out while it works to improve communication with players, stating that it is “conducting a comprehensive audit of all in-game assets” and “taking steps to replace any affected content.”
With the developer confirming the situation and outlining fixes, the issue is expected to be resolved in upcoming patches. To stay alert on the use of Generative AI in the video games industry, keep your radar on GameObserver.
