Palworld combines open-world exploration with creature-collection to provide an enjoyable RPG experience. However, you can only play Palworld enough times before the inevitable doldrums set in. Alternatively, you aren’t sure if you will like Palworld and want to try something similar first. What if you want the joy of construction, open-world exploration, or creature-collecting, but in a new realm?
A carbon copy of Palworld wouldn’t be suitable, otherwise you’d just keep playing. You want a new flavor that captures you just like Palworld did when you first played. Perhaps you want another game with similar gameplay before you commit to purchasing Palworld. There are a couple of titles with similar gameplay aspects, capturing the creature-collecting, open-world, or building experience.
ARK: Survival Evolved
You are stuck on a mysterious island where dinosaurs roam freely. Help isn’t coming that soon, and survival is in your hands. Scavenge for food, build a farm, and defend against the weather. Tame dinosaurs and breed them to fight against even tougher enemies. Survive on your own or team up with other players, growing your “tribe” to work together. Explore the island and discover what mysteries await you.
For the closest Palworld experience, you can’t go wrong with ARK: Survival Evolved. You have a large island to explore, structures to build on your own, and dinosaurs you can tame. Get used to the survival experience by yourself before teaming up with others and accomplishing goals. There’s a lot to learn, but eventually you build a few routines for yourself. Once you are comfortable surviving, the island is waiting with surprises to explore.
Pokémon Legends Z-A
Pokémon Legends Z-A puts you in Lumiose City, where you run around and catch Pokémon. There are also various Pokémon Trainers looking to test their prowess, challenging you to a battle at first sight. Lumiose City is a wonderful place to be, but there’s also something hidden behind the city’s backdrop. As you travel around and meet new companions, you must fight whatever threatens the city.
The classic creature-collecting experience has its own open-world experience as you explore one of the largest Pokémon cities. Several Pokémon inhabit the city, and there are plenty of opportunities to develop your team. Various Trainers and challenges keep you on your toes, and there are plenty of collectibles to watch out for. While you can’t freely construct within the city, it’s hard to top this creature-collector.
Cassette Beasts
Step into the world of New Wirral, an island where various creatures roam. You take on a creature’s form to battle, and you can “record” a creature onto a cassette tape. These cassette tapes can hold various creature records, even allowing you to fuse two of them for a new form. New Wirral is a large island you can explore, filled with various human companions who can accompany you. You can also team up with a friend during combat or battle them in a 1v1 fight.
Cassette Beasts has an unconventional creature capture method, but it still keeps the spirit of the genre alive. Recording creatures for their combat strength and combining your records to create new ones keeps you competitive. Exploring the world with your friend can also be fun, as well as pitting your skills against each other. There’s no construction, but Cassette Beasts is still an easy way to see if you like creature-collecting.
Valheim
In a world inspired by Norse mythology, you must survive either by yourself or in a group with up to ten individuals. You never go hungry but instead create food to give yourself powerful bonuses in battle. Create boats to sail to different islands, fighting new enemies or searching for valuables. The map is procedurally generated each time, giving you a new challenge or sense of discovery with every game.
The focus of Valheim is primarily on buildings, combat, and empowering food recipes. You won’t be catching many creatures; instead, you’ll be traveling around the world to fight powerful enemies. If you want a taste of the survival genre while focusing on yourself, this is a good game to start with. Should you have other friends to join you, working together can help you take down the most dangerous enemies.
Temtem
At the Airborne Archipelago, every child dreams of becoming a Temtem tamer. It’s your turn to make your dreams come true by traveling to all six islands of the Archipelago. Temtem are everywhere, and each island has new varieties for you to tame. Eight Dojo leaders represent the ultimate test of your abilities, pushing your team to their limits. While your journey is your own, other players are also embarking on their tamer journey alongside you.
Temtem is a perfect mix of creature-collecting and online multiplayer. You mostly play by yourself, but you can team up with another player. Once your Temtem are sufficiently trained, you can pit them against other players’ teams. There’s also a house you can purchase and decorate, though it’s not much of a base. Should you desire a creature-collecting experience with the feeling of others around you, Temtem is a solid choice.
Slime Rancher
Step into the shoes of Beatrix LeBeau, an aspiring young slime rancher. Having recently inherited a slime ranch, it’s up to Beatrix to make the ranch a success. Create food for your slimes and combine them to create new variations. Earn money by completing tasks, then spend that money on upgrades to make your operations more efficient. Spend time exploring your new home and surroundings, full of secrets just waiting to be found.
Slime Rancher is a cozy creature-collecting experience where you take your time developing your ranch. There’s no real combat to speak of, instead you are creating the best ranch possible. Finding all the slime variations and exploring the world can take hours, especially after you get the right upgrades. If you want a creature-collector that doesn’t push you too hard, this is a fantastic place to start.
Stardew Valley
Move to the titular Stardew Valley, where you inherit a farm in a local neighborhood. Revitalize the farm and grow a variety of crops that you can trade or cook with. Meet various people in the community and befriend them, perhaps even find a romantic partner! Explore beyond your local surroundings to find caves and dungeons with monsters to battle. Take the time to decorate your home and truly make it your own.
Stardew Valley is the perfect place to start if you are interested in building something for yourself. Part of the experience also involves fighting in dungeons and preparing yourself for combat. There’s not much creature-collecting outside of raising animals on a farm, but you still need to work your way up. Starting a farm from scratch may not look like much, but there’s lots to do in the game. It’s a great way to see if you appreciate the other aspects of base building before adding creature-collecting.
