The next installment in the God of War series was finally announced during yesterday’s PlayStation State of Play, and it immediately became one of the most talked-about announcements from the showcase. The game, titled God of War Laufey, was revealed with an extensive 20-minute gameplay presentation focused on Kratos’ late wife, Faye (Laufey). However, the event ended without a release date or even a release window.
Because of that, many fans assumed the project is still years away from launch. According to reliable Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, however, that is not the case. In a post on Bluesky, Schreier said players should not read too much into the missing release window. He explained that, unlike many other major game announcements, God of War Laufey is not “years away” from release. When one fan even asked whether the game could launch as late as 2028, Schreier replied, “Definitely not.”

According to these comments, the game’s development is much further along than many players initially believed, and the nearly 20 minutes of gameplay shown during the showcase is another positive sign. Studios usually do not reveal that much footage unless a game is already well into development, suggesting the team has been working on it for some time. While a clear launch window was not given, we can’t rule out the game launching in 2027, though this should be taken with a pinch of salt until it is officially confirmed.
As for platforms, God of War Laufey is currently planned as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. A PC version has not been announced, and since Sony has changed its strategy for bringing PlayStation games to PC, it is unlikely that the game will arrive on PC.
In other news, PlayStation Studios game sales have dropped sharply on PS5 compared to the PS4 era, as slower game production and higher prices may be affecting Sony’s first-party game lineup.
