Rumors that The Coalition had been working on Gears of War 6 before starting the prequel E-Day have now been confirmed by one of the series’ actors. Although we already knew that the Gears of War series was set to return, its comeback has been especially notable, beginning with the release of Reloaded, the remastered version of the first game.
This year, the focus shifts to Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel featuring Marcus and Dom, but many fans still want to know what happens next after Gears 5. The story of Kait Diaz and her team was originally meant to continue in a sixth game as part of The Coalition’s initial plan, according to Liam McIntyre, the actor who plays JD Fenix.
McIntyre recently spoke about the studio’s earlier plans for the franchise, explaining that the team had indeed been considering a sixth installment to continue the story. “We did Gears 4 and 5, and there was a suggestion that maybe there would be a Gears 6. But the team wanted to try something new as I understand it. And honestly, it looks great. Can’t wait to play,” Liam said. In fact, there had already been several reports about the sixth entry, including details about its possible gameplay direction, such as the idea of making it a fully open-world experience.

McIntyre added, “I hope they go back to it, but I love those guys and just want them to make a game they feel nails the Gears experience everyone loves. That’d be awesome. And hey, if that leads back to the trilogy, Happy days.” The actor also commented on one of the key moments from Gears 5, where Kait must choose whether to save JD or Del.
When asked how he thinks the story would continue, McIntyre said, “I have a solve for that regardless of what you choose. Hoping that Del is Canon, Marcus loses his mind and goes rogue, and you learn JD has kind of been revived and controlled by swarm, his dad has to fight him. But somehow you save him. Not sure how yet. Or if it matters.”
In related news, Gears of War: E-Day will get its own Direct presentation on June 7, following the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, where fans are expected to learn the release date and more details about one of the year’s most anticipated games.
