Bungie Announces End Of Destiny 2, Final Update Coming June 9

Bungie just made the shock announcement that from June 9, Destiny 2 will no longer be receiving live-service content. All existing plans for expansions or additional content have been cancelled, as the studio prepares to move on to begin a “new journey as a studio.”

The final update is titled Moment of Triumph, and will be available to all players. For those who have yet to play Destiny 2, a new bundle titled Destiny 2: The Collection will include all existing content and purchasable content packs in one purchase. The final update will be a celebration of all that Destiny has been through, offering Legendary Marks from past events, with free armor sets, accessories, weapons and more to earn. These awards seek to mark each player’s place in the history of Destiny 2, as Bungie leaves the game behind.

The Monument of Triumph event will conclude Destiny 2.

Additionally, story content will be added through “love letters” across activities with new details on characters, references to the history of the series and more. Other updates will add a new Pantheon, make Bright Dust rotation switch from weekly to daily, and many past weapon rewards from other seasonal events will return through Monument of Triumph vendors.

Bungie has not shared specifically what’s next for them. No mention of a potential ‘Destiny 3’ is made in their official announcement post, but they do make several references to their future as a studio. They say that it’s time for Destiny to “live beyond Destiny 2“, and also share they’re “incubating” their next games.

The most recent Star Wars-themed expansion failed to draw back Destiny fans.

We’ve no word on what exactly it is Bungie is working on next, but it follows the struggles they’ve had with Marathon. Their recent extraction shooter and Destiny 2 itself both underperformed to the point that Sony made a reassessment of their value and significantly lowered it, indicating disappointment with the studio behind the original Halo games and the Destiny franchise.

Time will tell what potential future might await Guardians in the Destiny universe. Check back often to GameObserver for all the latest, including future reveals from Bungie.
