The Coalition Says Gears of War: E-Day Was Never Planned For PS5

Earlier this week, Gears of War: E-Day got a new gameplay reveal and a release date of October 6. While fans were excited to see more of the game, many were also wondering why there was no PS5 version. That surprised many players, as earlier reports and leaks had suggested the game could be coming to PlayStation. As a result, some believed a PS5 version had been cancelled at the last minute. However, new comments from The Coalition suggest that was never the case.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer at Summer Game Fest, Studio Creative Director Matt Searcy and Brand Director Nicole Fawcette said that a PS5 version was never being made and that the game’s platform plans had not changed. When asked whether plans for a PS5 version had changed during development, Searcy said, “Well, we never talked about it.” Fawcette also backed up that point, adding, “It was never changed.”

Gears of War: E-Day will launch on October 6, for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

They also defended The Coalition’s decision to keep the game exclusive. Searcy explained, “I would say that, Gears as an exclusive, makes a tonne of sense. It’s kind of an honour, and exciting, to be one of the Xbox flagship titles. Of course, it’s awesome to have [more] people play our games, but for Xbox and PC, you’ve got what is out there.”

What makes this situation even more interesting is that before the Xbox showcase, the European PEGI ratings board published a listing that specifically mentioned Gears of War: E-Day for PS5. However, despite this, the developers have firmly denied that a PS5 version was ever part of the plan.

This decision could be part of Xbox’s new strategy to bring back its focus on exclusives, as the company has stated that future Xbox games will be handled on a “case-by-case” basis when it comes to platform availability.
