Sony Shocks With Decision To Shut Down Bluepoint Games

In news that has shocked parts of the gaming industry today, Sony has made the decision to shut down Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the remakes of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, along with Demon Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. With all of their games releasing to critical acclaim, it’s an incredibly surprising move to see PlayStation shutter the studio despite their success stories.

Early last year, Sony cancelled an unannounced live-service game from Bluepoint Games which was reportedly set in the God of War universe. After the cancellation, it’s claimed by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier that Bluepoint went on to pitch new titles throughout the last year until Sony ultimately decided to close the studio entirely. It has long been a desire for many PlayStation gamers to see more Bluepoint Games remakes, particularly for the beloved yet forgotten Bloodborne. With the studio now closed, we’ll likely be waiting a while for anymore remakes outside of Santa Monica Studio’s recently announced God of War remake trilogy.

The remake of Demon Souls from Bluepoint Games was one of this generation’s most visually striking games.

Since 2019, Sony has acquired 10 games studios – it has now closed three of them in the last two years. It started with Neon Koi back in 2024 with their closure before they could release their planned live-service mobile game, and continued with the infamous closure of Firewalk Studios, the developers behind Concord. Bluepoint Games is now the third in this list, but stands out as being a studio with several established popular titles in their library. From their seven other acquired studios, two of them have yet to release any new games during their Sony ownership.

The closure of Bluepoint Games is a developing story that has sent shockwaves through the professional gaming industry and gamers alike. We’ll be sure to report on any further developments should they arrive, so be sure to check back often to GameObserver for more breaking gaming news written for humans and by humans.
