The team over at Mega Crit just released the March edition of their monthly newsletter, called ‘The Neowsletter’, and it comes with a major update on their recently released Slay the Spire 2. After just a singular week on sale in Early Access, Slay the Spire 2 has sold over 3 million units on Steam. From there, the studio also shared that there have been over 25 million runs through the spire from those gamers already. We loved the game in our Early Access review, so it’s not hard to understand why so many opted to pick the game up early!
These numbers are absolutely monumental, and comparing them to the first Slay the Spire game will help in adding some context to this enormous success. The original 2017 Early Access release sold just 2,000 copies in the first few weeks from its launch, having a full release in January 2019 and going on to sell 1.5 million copies by March that same year. Slay the Spire 2 therefore has sold double the entire first two years of the original Slay the Spire in a single week. Headlines were already made after Slay the Spire 2‘s launch day out-peaked Marathon‘s launch Steam player count, but the game refused to stop growing.

Going forwards, there is no specific roadmap for when things are coming to Slay the Spire 2, with just the guarantee of pretty much additional everything, including new cards, events, endings and more. The choice to launch into Early Access was done to take in fan feedback as they venture through the spire and share their thoughts, hopefully then resulting in an even better final product once the full game launches. Mega Crit currently estimate that Slay the Spire 2 will be having its full launch within one to two years.
For those who already picked up Slay the Spire 2, today’s newsletter did confirm exactly what changes will be coming to the game first following player feedback. The badge and scoring systems will be revamped, more art and VFX will be added, along with balance patches, quality of life features, Twitch integration, Steam Workshop support, friend-only leaderboards and even an accessibility mode for phobias.
Changes and updates will first be tested in the beta build of the game that’s available to all Slay the Spire 2 players on Steam in their Properties menu.
