It’s the tenth anniversary of Overwatch! It’s a time for celebration, community and jumping into some games of the iconic hero shooter. Or rather, it should be, but the community haven’t been very happy with what was delivered recently.
Following the reveal of the 10th Anniversary Event, the player base almost immediately responded negatively on social media, given the new skins available exclusively in the event were recolors of base skins – and required playing an extreme amount of games to unlock.

Now though, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller has released a statement on social media to address the backlash, along with teasing some new rewards. He says the team “agree that rewards broadly can be more than loot boxes”, responding to the criticism that most of the new anniversary cosmetics are found in dedicated Anniversary Loot Boxes, adding they will have “updates down the road” to keep the anniversary celebrations going throughout the year.
The bit fans were waiting to hear though comes in his fourth post, which reveals Blizzard will be “increasing the number of community loot boxes: doubling in Week 2 and tripling in Week 3”, along with them “reducing the total number of games to earn all 15 Anniversary Loot Boxes to 60”, where wins count as double.

To sweeten the deal that bit more, in the third and final week of celebrations, all players will get one 10 Year Anniversary Loot Box – which has four guaranteed Legendary skins.
As this is the tenth year of Overwatch, celebrations will continue even beyond this specific anniversary event. In Season 3, there will be a season-long event with constant rewards to earn, and the amount of rewards earned by playing games per week will also be increased. We’ll be sure to report on future Overwatch updates as the game hits a decade running, so stay tuned to GameObserver for all the latest.
