Marathon Goes Free-To-Play For One Week Starting Tomorrow

It’s already the end of Marathon’s first season, and delivering on their pledge to keep supporting the game, Bungie is dropping Season 2 tomorrow – that’s June 2 at time of writing. To entice potential new players into trying out what’s next for Marathon, the extraction shooter will be entirely free to download and play for all gamers on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, even without a paid online subscription plan.

The free week will begin June 2 at 10AM PDT / 1PM EDT / 6PM BST / 7PM CEST, and ends on June 9, likely at the same hour in your region that the free week started. From there, Marathon will return to being a fully paid title.

Players need to illuminate the night variant of Dire Marsh on their own.

If you’re dropping in to Marathon either as a first-timer or a returning fan, there’s a lot being added with tomorrow’s update. Perhaps the most significant is a remixed version of Dire Marsh at night, which brings new enemies, events and loot as you’re tasked with navigating the darkness with both flares and flashlights. There’s also a new defensive shell with the Sentinel, along with a new system to upgrade your runner’s abilities as the season progresses along with much more.

Bungie’s shift towards a free-to-play model, even just for a trial week, is part of their commitment to keep the game supported for as long as they’re able. Marathon underperformed from its launch, but Bungie is surely hoping that the free trial can bring in new players to keep the game’s community active.

Become the Sentinel for a defensive approach to combat.

Coincidentally, if you’re looking for more free games to play, the day Marathon‘s free week ends is also when Destiny 2 drops its final update as Bungie ends support for the long-standing sci-fi MMO shooter.
