Throughout 2025, rumors were abuzz about the possibility of a sequel or spinoff to Final Fantasy IX in honor of the game’s 30th anniversary. One very persistent rumor was of an animated retelling of the game. That rumor has belatedly turned out to be half true, as EuroVisual Studios, a French studio specializing in family-friendly animated series, has officially added Final Fantasy, Black Mages Legacy to its new titles page.
In addition to announcing the title, the company also confirmed the project will be a 2D animated series, featuring 10 episodes of 22 minutes. The show is confirmed to feature the last Black Mages of the four continents—Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc—children of Vivi Ornitier (also referred to as Bibi on EuroVisual Studio’s new projects page) who live peacefully in Alexandria until one day Koln finds their brother Mel frozen in a crystal. The remaining siblings leave immediately for a cure for their brother’s condition, venturing into the strange wild world around them.
While many of the leaked details have not yet been officially confirmed by EuroVisual Studios to be in the show, the information released on their new projects page matches much of the information initially found in the leaked presentation. However, neither website nor leaked documents provides a planned release date for the series.
Though not much info is officially out there, we can infer certain things from the past of EuroVisual Studios. A successor to the now-liquidated Cyber Group Studios, the company acquired the rights to the Final Fantasy IX series, presumably as part of the 80% of the assets acquired by them following its closure. Cyber Group Studios previously worked on shows aimed primarily at the youngest audience, such as Gigantosaurus and The Bellflower Bunnies, so it can be assumed that this new series is likely to follow that tradition.
