Dear & Boy Release Date Announced During Wholesome Direct

The Wholesome Direct 2026 revealed the official release date for Deer & Boy, which is coming out later this very month, on June 23, 2026. Deer & Boy, by developer Lifeline Studio and published by Dear Villagers, is an upcoming narrative adventure platformer about a young boy and fawn as they travel across the countryside together over an extended period of time, traveling through towns, hopping trains, exploring caves, braving winter storms and sometimes just having moments of quiet reflection alone and with each other.

The trailer showed during the announcement has scenes of the boy traveling alone, searching for the fawn, being surprised by it searching for him in return, and the boy needing to stop to encourage the fawn to hop across a small stream. Later shots showed the fawn, fully grown into a deer, exploring on a separate track from the boy, making its antlers glow to help light the way, and even briefly using some sort of bright magic to deal with obstacles barring it and the boy. Adding to the supernatural elements along with the deer’s glowing horns, a fantastical cave, lit in eerie purples could also be seen, along with purple wisps that flew around the two title characters.

What there wasn’t any of in the trailer was dialogue, and that’s because there aren’t any in the game. While the deer and boy do make noise, the game lacks any form of spoken or written dialogue, trying to tell its story entirely through the use of mood setting music and moments to speak directly to the player’s emotions, doing away with the distraction of words and making the story accessible to anyone, regardless of their age or language.

Deer & Boy is being released for Steam, with verified Steam Deck support, on the Epic Game Store, for the Nintendo Switch, the PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X|S. For other news from this year’s Wholesome Direct, click here!
