Corsair Cove Review – The Treacherous Pirate Journey

What’s the most important quality when it comes to being a pirate? Everyone has their own ideas but they mostly relate to notoriety, wealth, power, or adventure. In Corsair Cove, you decide what being a pirate means to you by establishing the most powerful pirate nation in existence. The historical base builder, developed by Limbic Entertainment and published by Hooded Horse, dares you to aim for greatness. How you make your mark as a pirate is up to you. Be renowned for one aspect or master everything with time.

The setting takes place near the end of the pirate age. As countries begin cracking down on pirates, you follow a small band of captured pirates who manage to free themselves. Sailing to an abandoned cove, they establish a base camp that eventually becomes the foundation of their pirate nation. After fending off some pursuers, the pirates begin to define what being a pirate means to them. There’s no clear definition but a few leads provide some opportunities to guide the direction of your piracy career.

Building space is at a premium near your cove, with few shores and forests to safely build structures. Fortunately, you are also capable of building vertically, placing housing and taverns on cliff faces. This allows you to expand across the area and let your creativity come alive. You must account for supplies to move between buildings or your crew goes without resources. If your crew feels you aren’t taking care of them, you risk rebellion that is painful to address.

Developing your cove is important but as pirates, you must also sail into the world to achieve your goals. There are four story paths you can pursue and you win the game when you finish any one of them. However, you have encounters where success is determined by choices and dice rolls. You may have successful voyages or a painful loss that you must spend time to recover from.

There’s a lot of information thrown at you, but Corsair Cove has a detailed tutorial that guides you. Even if some aspects must be learned on your own, the tutorial covers vital information while letting you make your own choices. By learning how buildings are connected, you plan your vertical construction and expansion spots. Voyages, resources, and defense are also vital aspects the game carefully guides you through.

I appreciated having a thorough tutorial that prepared me for the future. While learning through experience is always part of the process, Corsair Cove ensured I knew what I was doing before the training wheels came off. If I made mistakes after that, it wouldn’t be because the game didn’t mention something. The more likely outcome was that I forgot something crucial or didn’t review information as thoroughly as I thought.

One of Corsair Cove’s biggest strengths is the ability to choose how you develop your pirate nation. As long as you stick to completing one of the four paths, you can freely progress as you like. This means you can go all-in on one story or mix-and-match some stories to get long-term benefits. Should one path prove to be too difficult, you can always come back later and focus on something else.

The advantage for me was the ability to choose how I wanted to play and how I imagined being a pirate. Did I want to be the most notorious pirate in existence or was being rich all I cared about? Could I enjoy a bit of both before I made my decision? Maybe neither path was working out and I could pursue another goal. There’s flexibility in your choices and you only need one right answer to win.

It’s also fun to try different paths to see what it’s like. Corsair Cove encourages you to experiment with the other choices to get some early benefits. As you continue to play, your luck may naturally shift you into one of the story paths. It’s also possible to decide on a goal and force your way through even if bad events make progression difficult. Winning takes time, but you aren’t locked in at any point, letting you choose what’s right for you.

Being a pirate means living a risky life, not every voyage ends with amazing success. While you can prepare with supplies and better ships, events often have choices affected by dice rolls. You can choose to play cautiously or risk it all quickly if you can’t afford to draw things out. Certain preparation can mitigate bad luck, but there will be times where you will lose more than you expected. Thankfully you can never lose your captain and can always try again. Recovery may take a while, but soon you will sail the seas again.

Having events with some measure of randomness is a double-edged sword. The best part is that it immerses you in the journey; no event is a definite success, even if you prepare as much as possible. It emulates the risk that all pirates take on when they pursue their goals. Sometimes you make it and sometimes you don’t. Good preparation mitigates most of the threat, but you are encouraged to take your failures as they come.

On the other hand, recovering from failure is not easy. Failing often means a damaged ship, a depleted crew, and an injured captain at best. Regaining the resources to try again also isn’t easy, especially in the early-game. The fact that even the best preparation can’t prevent every loss means you often spend your downtime recovering. And even a successful journey depletes resources that forces you to wait before trying again.

This drags out the gameplay since you must spend time reaccumulating a crew, repairing your ship, and stocking supplies. You must also ensure that your pirate cove continues to run smoothly, otherwise you can’t afford to sail out. Even if you are experienced enough to mitigate the biggest threats, Corsair Cove is still a long game that isn’t for everyone.

Corsair Cove lets you build a pirate base in all directions, letting your creativity thrive as you expand. A detailed tutorial gives you a solid foundation and multiple win conditions create lots of replayability. Dealing with failure can be difficult though, as there’s often a time-consuming recovery. Long games can also feel repetitive if you know what to do, but aren’t lucky enough to succeed. Corsair Cove immerses you in the pirate risks, for better or for worse.
