It’s been a little under two weeks since the 9th mainline installment of the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil Requiem, was released. Already, the game has been a huge hit, breaking record sales in the franchise after selling over five million units in just five days.
Today, Requiem Director Koshi Nakanishi announced that a story expansion is in the works, along with some updates that will add additional features, including a photo mode and a minigame, which is due to release in May.
While it’s still unconfirmed what the story expansion will be about and who will be its protagonist, Nakanishi has said: “We will delve deeper into the world of Requiem.” He also advised that the expansion will take some time to be released, but promised that the team are already working hard on it.

Previously, Resident Evil story expansions have often focused on expanding the stories of side characters in the basegame, such as the most recent Separate Ways DLC for the Resident Evil 4 remake, which focused on what Ada Wong was doing while Leon was busy escorting the president’s daughter, Ashley, to safety. Shadows of Rose was a story expansion for Resident Evil Village, which takes place 16 years after the basegame and follows Rosemary Winters, the now grown-up daughter of Ethan Winters, whose plot in the basegame involves saving her after she’s kidnapped as a baby.
Resident Evil Requiem‘s main storyline revolves around two protagonists, the first being FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, a new character in the series, who finds herself kidnapped by an ex-Umbrella scientist, Victor Gideon, while investigating a string of deaths affecting Raccoon City incident survivors, which seem somehow related to the murder of her mother eight years prior. Meanwhile, DSO agent and franchise fan-favourite, Leon S. Kennedy, returns to the series having been absent from the storyline for 11 years. As survivors of the Raccoon City incident, he and another returning character, Sherry Birkin, are also investigating the deaths, exhibiting their own symptoms of the mysterious illness.
In the announcement video, Nakanishi jokingly flipped through some draft ideas before falling on the story expansion announcement, including a version with cats and a Leon romance DLC called ‘Forbidden Requiem’.
