One of the most satisfying trends in the past few years on the indie scene is the return of desktop assistants. Once a magical novelty for kids to play around with on their parents’ laptops that would most likely slow the machine down to a crawl (with a few data-stealing controversies to boot), now a fully realized, honest, and beloved genre of games and apps. If you haven’t found one for yourself, perhaps Working With Montabi from the developer Mankibo will be the one for you.
Working With Montabi, announced at today’s Akupara Direct, is a desktop companion spin-off to the studio’s deckbuilding creature-collector roguelike Montabi, dedicated to writing. If you don’t know how these types of apps work, you launch the game into a small corner of your screen, customize it to your liking, and get to writing. Different Montabi creatures will come to visit you periodically depending on the kind of environment you set up. The game will feature built-in productivity tools such as a to-do list, a memo menu to jot down quick notes, and timers to track your work sessions.

Periodically, your avatar will comment on your work with words of affirmation. The game also allows you to pet the Montabi as they arrive, and they might leave a gift when they leave. Some might be very elusive, meaning there’s also a passive catch-em-all quality to it. One of the possible encounters includes the Survivor slugcat from Akupara-published cult classic Rain World in collaboration with the developer Videocult.
Though it does not yet have a release date, Working With Montabi can be wishlisted on Steam. You can check out the rest of our coverage of the Akupara Direct here, and be sure to check back at GameObserver in the future for indie game news and reviews!
