Weekly Mobile & Gacha Roundup: Idol Games Take The Stage In May

Competition in mobile gaming app stores can be fierce, with familiar and new gacha games constantly rising and falling in the rankings. We’ll be tracking them weekly across major regions, and this week’s charts cover May 15 to May 21. Based on estimated top-grossing rankings from Sensor Tower and AppMagic, the figures below combine estimates across both Android and iOS.

Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail continued to flex HoYoverse’s dominance across multiple regions this week. GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE is also enjoying renewed momentum in Korea, likely helped by its more light-hearted B-Side Idol event after last month’s emotional 3.5 Half Year-Anniversary storyline. In Japan, though, Umamusume: Pretty Derby surprisingly slipped and was taken over by Gakuen iDOLM@STER, which recently celebrated its 2nd anniversary with a major 3D live concert.

Shooters and MOBAs still dominate, but idol-themed events and games are enjoying a spending surge as well.

Spending drop in the former might reflect players entering ‘money-saving mode,’ however, as the Paka Live TV #3 news stream is scheduled for May 27 next week. Fans are already speculating about a possible June Bride-themed update, including rumors of Wedding Dress variants for Gentildonna or Chrono Genesis, giving them a reason to stock up on Paid Jewels. Meanwhile, SD Gundam G Generation ETERNAL stayed in the country’s Top 10 gacha following the game’s first anniversary celebrations in April, which added fan-favourite Wing Gundam Zero unit. It helps that the Gundam franchise is also in celebration mode ahead of its 50th anniversary next year with a new Gundam Wing project in the works, giving a nice extra boost to mecha hype.

Last but not least, one curious case. Neverness to Everness — arguably one of the biggest newcomers in the gacha conversation right now — only managed to barely break into one region’s Top 10 and is nowhere in sight elsewhere. Recent controversy surrounding generative AI usage may have hurt its performance, but there’s another explanation as well. These charts only track mobile spending, meaning the ‘anime GTA’ could simply find a bigger audience on PC and PS5 instead.

Here’s how major mobile and gacha games performed across key regions for the week of May 15 to 21.
