An alleged Call of Duty leaker sent waves through the shooting game community yesterday with his “exclusive” report that Call of Duty‘s next game will be a standalone Zombies title developed by Treyarch. This was widely reported across gaming media sites and channels, but the official Call of Duty X (formerly Twitter) account just went public in denying the rumor directly.
Responding to a tweet from Dexerto sharing their coverage of the alleged standalone Zombies game, the official Call of Duty account responded saying “The rumor factory working overtime. This ain’t it.” It’s unusual to see a brand account deny a rumor so publicly, especially one that fans were so excited to see as a potential reality. Many fans feel Zombies is an integral part of the Call of Duty experience, with that passion likely fuelling yesterday’s rumor spreading so intensely. However, it seems this is fake.

Despite responding to set the record straight, the replies to the correction post are full of Call of Duty fans being unhappy to see them shut down the rumor. With so many in the community feeling that the franchise needs to try something new following series fatigue – an issue that the franchise has pledged to handle by stopping yearly releases – it’s unfortunate timing from a fan perspective to shoot down the idea of a new potential game that would’ve been something different than the typical formula.
What do you think the future of Call of Duty should look like? With the series owner Microsoft being under new leadership at Xbox, it seems anything’s possible. Except a standalone Zombies game.
