Black Myth: Zhong Kui Won’t Use AI To Speed Up Development

With artificial intelligence becoming more common in game development, will Black Myth: Zhong Kui also make use of the technology? For now, the answer from Game Science is no. The developers have ruled out using generative AI for the design and creation of the game’s graphic assets, choosing instead to rely on human talent.

Yang Qi, Game Science co-founder and art director, made the team’s position clear while responding directly to a user on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. The user had asked about using artificial intelligence to speed up development. The team has shown no interest in rushing to use the latest AI tools. Instead, Game Science wants to focus on its developers and give them the time they need to produce work with as much care and quality as possible.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui ai
Game Science is in “no rush” to release Black Myth: Zhong Kui.

Yang Qi explained (thanks ResetERA), “We’ll steer clear of AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) during the design and asset phases—not out of resistance, but simply to stand our ground until the very end.” In short, Game Science simply wants to do its best work and make sure the artistic side of Black Myth: Zhong Kui is shaped by the creativity, ideas, and personal touch of its developers, rather than relying on AI to create graphic assets.

Yang Qi also compared this approach to director Christopher Nolan, who continues to use more traditional filmmaking methods despite Hollywood’s growing use of digital effects and 3D post-production. He said, “At a time when digital filmmaking and 3D post-production seem to have reached a dead end, look at Nolan—he’s thriving, using even older techniques to shake things up… There’s no ‘last train’ we absolutely have to catch; we can just stay at a small inn for a while. Besides, there’s plenty of time for AI and all that—no rush.”

As the team seems to be in “no rush” to speed up the game’s development, a launch later this year or in early 2027 seems highly unlikely. However, if the development timeline changes or we get another update on the game’s release window, we’ll make sure to let you guys know here at GameObserver.
